I'm a scientist and the data does not support your assertions. Breast feeding a 2-7 year old is not natural in any society, but that number is an oft quoted Kathy Dettwyler paper. There is no country in the world with an average age of breast feeding higher than 31 months (Bangladesh). Age 4 is not "within the realm of normal".


What's the average of zero and seven?

I have a serious question, not meant to throw flames, I promise. Why is it that the only people I know of or have witnessed nursing beyond two only do this with boys. Is that just my own random experience? Has anyone seen this with girls?

exactly. pretending like this is anything but emotionally harmful to a child (physically probably doesn't matter one way or another) is just naive. mom needs a therapist.

and to the pp who said it's possible the kid was like, 6 months and looked 4 - come on. what are the chances?

women breastfeeding until the child is older in developing countries is a sad symptom of poverty, not "staying true to our prehistoric roots". these families have no options and these children are starving. western women who glamorize this as anything else are clueless and frankly, insulting.

Nah, republican women don't do the extended breastfeeding thing. I think that with rare exception that behavior falls into the crunchy granola mom realm, wh without exception tend to be on the liberal side of the house.

True. Except then OP would have included in her original post that mom was sitting their breastfeeding her 4 year old while her other 12 children were being looked after by their big sisters

Asked to produce the countries, they are inevitably primitive or impoverished (we've heard Bangladesh and Nepal so far in this thread), so any extended nursing has more to do with meeting basic food needs (i.e., prevent the kid from starving) more than any specific magical virtue. Call me crazy but I don't really concern myself with what anyone else besides my own family and our waiter/waitress at a restaurant. I wouldn't even notice if a lady took her boob out and shook at us, it's none of my business unless she walked up to our table and did so. Mind your business.
