I - and I'm assuming others here - just can't get over the gall of people who think that a $20K engagement ring is no big deal. Do you watch the news? Do you have any fucking idea what a flippant bitch you sound like making these comments when the average household income is around $50K/yr and so many people are out of work? Have a little self awareness - not to mention awareness of the reality of the vast majority of people in this world that is totally different from yours. I'm guessing this PP is the same bitch who posted asking people to explain being "poor" b/c the poor "fascinate" her. Your unmitigated gall fascinates me.

And for your information, since you've chosen to judge me, I'm the person that you quoted, and my engagement ring actually cost less than $2000 and contains no diamonds.
I'm the original poster the quoter quoted. I realize exactly what 4-5 carat band looks like with small stones. You can tell me to the end of time that it isn't "that big" and you are wrong. It is a big statement to walk around every day with that on your finger. People do judge. You may not care, or you may like being judged that way.... whatever. I don't care. But people do judge. I personally prefer to pass through life having strangers know less about me. YMMV.
But here's the thing about a person who comes to this thread a billion times to check what is being said about this and comes across as so superior to others that wear diamonds--strangers or people who are your acquaintances can probably detect what a pia you are in many other attitudes that you strongly hold. It must be really hard for you to go around judging people bitterly because they buy a piece of jewelry for personal reasons. Sheesh; get a hobby.

Eternity bands...tacky. My MIL talks about going to Tysons to look for one. They remind me of the jewelry section of the old JC Penney and Sears catalogs. Right next to the girdles. I guess Walmart and QVC are today's equivalent. If you go the QVC route you don't even have to get out of your housecoat.

PP, you are mistaken here. I think these eternity bands are crap and and cheese ball--but the reality is that the individual stones are NOT 4-5 carats--that would be a GINORMOUS band that you'd not be able to close your fist with it on. Rather, I'm sure the OP is referring the TOTAL weight of the stones together--which is what these QVC looking crap e-bands are. They are crass not because of what they cost--you can get one for 3-4k, hardly a kings ransom. The whole RHONJ look of them is what I find hilariously distasteful.

I haven't read this entire thread (and wow do they get nasty) but I would never turn in my engagement ring regardless of size. It means too much to me. For those with small rings, that's where we came from (I have much bigger rings now than my engagement ring but not $20k!) I never want to trade up and if I ever lost that ring it would destroy me. I wear others to celebrate anniversaries, etc.

I disagree. I don't think people pay that much attention, or really judge. I have some flipping amazing family jewels and I don't think people judge me for wearing them. Small stones people tend not to notice or register that much and larger stones are very often assumed fake. Maybe YOU judge diamonds or jewelry. I see lots of nice jewelry everywhere, it never makes me think twice.
