I use a power washer, no detergent or bleach. After it dries I use those big contractor bags as a liner. Only need to clean the bin twice a year and you can store it without smelling in the garage.

My husband buys these commercial odor things and sticks them under the lid. The current one smells like oranges.

If a pesticide spills or leaks, don't use a hose to clean up. Soak up the liquid with an absorbent material like sawdust or kitty litter, then sweep the material into a plastic bag and clean the area with a mixture of water and bleach.


But if you really want to avoid bleach, you can use Simple Green or 7th Generation Disinfectant. Both are natural disinfectants, safe for waterways.

Trash can cleaning… a chore that most of us don’t want to do! Our outdoor garbage cans are often smelly, grimy and generally repulsive! ??

If it rains during the day that the trash is picked up, I usually take the can back up my driveway (after being emptied), flip the lid and leave out in the rain to give it a rain bath. Then I empty it, give it a few sprays with bleach and let it dry out. Easy.

You disinfect to get rid of smell and eliminate maggots. Flys are attracted to the smell, then comes the maggots.

A PP mentioned the garbage collectors. For their sakes, especially in the hot summer months, it would be good for everyone to regularly clean their garbage cans and avoid letting them become stanky horror shows.

Love the tip to drill holes in the bottom of the garbage cans -- thanks pps!
