Not at ALL to contradict PP's experience, but I had an elective termination at 8-9 weeks (not a wanted pregnancy) without any anesthesia, and while it hurt & was stressful, it wasn't totally horrific. One good thing was that I was able to recover very quickly and get the hell out of there and be back to feeling like myself very quickly. general anesthesia or even just demerol (puking) would have made recovery drag on and required additional time in the clinic (also more risks to me, physically). Of course, termination of a wanted pregnancy at 13 weeks obviously has different considerations, but I just wanted to throw out there that there are some benefits to just getting it over with with no seriousmeds. In retrospect, I think the perfect combination would have been a big dose of ibuprofen and valium ahead of time.
