A friend from high school had a baby this week and named her Jemma Jane. I like it!

Yes, this. Even if you have never heard of the name, surely Americans have seen the word "gem". Why would you think "Gemma" has a hard "g" sound?

OP, I think it's a pretty name.

That's my nanny's name. She's from the Philippines.

I don't know why prounciation would be an issue for anyone. Most people know how to say the word gem (as in gemstone). You just add "ma" to the end. Not so hard.

Considered for dd1 but decided on something else. I'm pregnant again with a girl and it's not a contender. There's a girl in our daycare with the name.

I love the name. My friend's daugjter is named Gemma they have no connections to viler gangs 16:59. But she is totally adorable. And people she pronounces her name the way the OP intends. Enough with all your snark.

I like it. Know 2 Irish girls with that name, so I think of it as an Irish name.

I feel terribly ignorant but I have seen this name in writing before but I had no idea how to pronounce it before this thread.

My name is Gemma & go through times where I like it & then don't. It's probably due to there being so many Gemma's in the uk. Would like a more unique name. 1 thing I do wanna say is that, I have never been called Germs for short! Nor has anyone I know with the same name. I get called Gem for short

Sounds like you might sleep facing Britain! I understand that Gemma and Nigel are popular names there at the moment.

No, no! I'm British and Nigel is definitely a very dated name and not something remotely popular for babies now. Maybe in the 50s or 60s but not now. Likewise Gemma is a 1980s name. I wouldn't say that Gemma was an actively unpopular name now though, however I would say that of Nigel. You'd never be taken seriously if you called your kid that in the UK!

When I look at it quickly, I see the word "Germs". And in UK, they would call her "Germs" for short. As in: "Could you pass the salt? Thanks Germs.

No, you are wrong about the first part. I think she'd have to deal with that all her life.

Um, when is G + vowel + consonant ever hard in the English language?
