Hmm, I guess reading the responses, my commute is also short, but in reality it is long to me now.

I used to live 3 miles from work, and it would take 8 minutes to get there. Since I moved, I'm about 13 miles away and it now takes me 20-25 minutes to get to work.

Sorry, you're ruining this one all by yourself. You apparently live very close to a metro station and work practically on top of another metro station, with just one stop in between. Why on earth are you sitting in traffic?

I'm not the OP, but I have the same commute. In my case, taking the metro would be a lot longer and would cost more than it does for me to drive.
I live about a mile from the metro station-- so it is either a mile walk, an inconsistent bus ride, or an annoying drive to the parking lot (and paying metro parking). And, there are relatively large distances to traverse, from the parking garage to the metro, imho...grosvenor-strathmore is not a particularly well designed station for quick commuting. Then, when I get to Bethesda, it is another say 6-8 minutes to get to my building (including two minute for the escalator out of the station and a few minutes to wait to cross a couple lights). Parking in Bethesda is less than the cost of the roundtrip metro fare+ metro parking. It is true that the actual time on the metro is short...it is just everything else, and we all know how reliable metro is! For this gal--and I'll be the OP-- the cost benefit analysis definitely says drive.

Bethesda (Live) to Wheaton/SS (Work.)
12-15 minutes. Drive just 2 exits on the beltway.
I can count the traffic I have been in on 1 hand after almost 2 school years.
(I am a teacher.)

I have a 1.5 mile commute, 7 minutes door to door (North Bethesda to just over the Rockville line), free parking. Biggest issue in my commute: will I encounter the school bus?
This is still fairly new after commuting from Rockville to somewhere downtown/close to Capitol Hill for 15 years. It sucked!

3 minute walk from my house to my office at the end of our street.

live in Arlington (Lee Heights), work at 12th & Penn, carpool w/ a friend.

Normal commute @7:45 am and 5:30pm: 20-25 mins.
Normal " @7:15 am: 15 -20

~6.5 miles

In a pinch, by metro & bus, 45 mins.-1 hr.

Under 10-minute drive -- McLean to Tysons. Even on the worst day, it's been under ten minutes.

I go Capitol Hill to College Park, about 20 minutes but reverse traffic so a very easy drive. DH goes Capitol Hill to downtown, also about 20 minutes. He goes a much shorter distance, but it takes just as long because of traffic. It takes longer on the Metro and he has free parking at work so he drives, except when we plan to meet for dinner at Eastern Market and then he takes the Metro to and from.
