UGH! Our elementary does honor roll and I hate it. I think it's ridiculous for first graders to be on honor roll or just miss it or something. They develop at different rates and the younger grades should be about development, not parent competition, which is all honor roll is. And before someone snipes, my kid was on honor roll 3 of 4 quarters last year (missed is by one grade the other quarter).

I'm the one who posted that we don't have honor roll. What qualifies a student for honor roll at your school? Do you know if it will change next year?

There is no GPA. Don't even try to figure one out. The scale is not an average. There was no GPA with the O,G,S,N scale either.

How do they do honor role without GPA's? Or do they not do that now....

I've taught elementary students for 19 years in FCPS and we've never had an honor roll at my school.

Please DON'T help my child! I HATE that they allow other parents to "volunteer" in the classroom. I would gladly pay double the taxes to get paid more professionals in the classroom rather than having catty, nosey parents working with my child (who isn't behind, btw).

WTF?

Catty nosey parents sure lets double taxes sounds like a plan to me...

As a parent I like that the sports is balanced with the grades, he loves his sports but if we had to pick, grades would come first. But it is nice that he sees both as important. He has all 4's so I suppose I could game it and just make it up but that seems like a bad idea. How does everyone else do it?

I don't do it because it's not possible. It is a standards based progress report. They are not averages. They aren't percentage based. A "4" does NOT equal an "O" which does NOT equal an "A". There is no GPA in the elementary grades.

Right. It's just the elementary progress reports that have the 1-4 scale.

I dont think it's that difficult to have a letter grade + comments. "B" Little Johnny is a terrific reader and well beyond his peers but has trouble following directions and completing assignments (like his reading log). These ate big parts of the grade 2 curriculum and he needs to work on following through on these tasks. I'm sure with improvements in effort in these areas next Q he'll have an A.

HS will need letter grades anyway, so schools will need to convert them to some sort of measurable comparison system. This helps parents more than the current "O" or "S" and number system, IMHO.

Hmmm...I don't know. I teach 3rd grade for FCPS and I don't quite understand it all. We implement the new grading system next year and I don't think we're ready ready for it.

Not understanding how they can go "well beyond" if there isn't a curriculum presented to them to allow this. If they get a "4" at the beginning of the year with a level 2 effort, it would make sense to me that they need a higher level curriculum given to them, not that they need to put more effort into doing something that they've already mastered.
