I posted earlier, but was reminded by this thread how much I loved Jane Eyre (just re-read it (again!) this winter) and Possession.

Lots of the classics mentioned are interesting and compelling, especially for their insights on times gone by, but don't make it to favorite status.

Jeffrey Eugenides' (Middlesex) new book will be coming out this summer. Yay! It's been about 10 years since Middlesex, with nothing in between.

I also love To Kill A Mockingbird. But one of my all time favorite books is Huckleberry Finn. Love, love love it!

The Things They Carried was also a favorite book.

I am curious about everyone who loves A Thousand Splendid Suns. I thought Kite Runner was a much better book. I read/listened to both a couple of times.

Another Owen Meany (and John Irving) fan here.

But, to add something new, my second fav is Their Eyes Are Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston.

If we are adding life changing books, then we have to add The Color Purple by Alice Walker.

Also count The Scarlet Letter by Hawthorne on my short list, so you are not alone, PP. Can't wait 'til my kids are old enough to read it. I am envious you got to share it with your daughter!

Did anybody say Bleak House by Dickens yet? That's at the top of my medium short list.

The Help, I Know This Much is True, She's Come Undone, A Thousand Splendid Suns, for a total beach read (not the best novel of all time): Good in Bed

That's true. So much about loving a particular novel is your POV at the time you read it. Sometimes I go back to a book I "thought" I loved (ahem, The Thornbirds(!)) only to realize that it wasn't all that.

Still, Lady Brett Ashley was my heroine for so long that I don't know that I'll ever give her up!

Fave book of 2011- "just kids".
