Just set a budget, find a bag you like within it, and use that bag until you get tired of it or it falls apart . . . and FWIW, there are luxury bags with crap quality (hello, Christian Dior!), so don't assume that price and quality are commensurate.
There are a few brands that I like that aren't "luxury" but are fashion-forward, functional, and decently constructed: Mansur Gavriel, Loeffler Randall, Dragon Diffusion, Staud, and Hunting Season. Sezane also has nice bags, although the quality can be iffy. I also find that Anthro is the best place to find relatively inexpensive bags if you want something more trendy or whimsical but don't want to break the bank.
I will confess that my everyday workhorse bag is a Goyard tote. I know it's "basic," but it's lightweight, takes a beating, is impervious to rain, and holds a ton of stuff. I fitted it with a felt insert I bought from Etsy, so it's easy to organize, too.
