What SOLs are required in high school?

I’m trying to see the impact to my child this new rule will have.

Math 7, prealgebra, Algebra 1, geometry, algebra 2

Reading 7, reading 8, writing 8, reading 11, writing 11

Science 8, biology, chemistry, earth science

Social studies tends to do PBAs each year, but they could bring back tests I suppose. Then history 7, civics 8, and I’m not sure the sequence in high school.

My on-level, non advanced kid took four in high school. Maybe there was a PBA instead of exam in there as well, I don’t remember. I think the one you really can’t get out of is the two-part English one in 11th grade.

My kid took very few SOLs in high school. Most were in middle school, and those grades don’t count for very much in college admissions. I think this proposal is dumb, but it will affect every kid in VA schools so it will even out among the cohort that admissions officers look to compare. For all your super-advanced kids, they will take so few in high school so chill out.

Again. What is the difference between SOL and an in school administed test ? It should be the exact same material mastery being established.

I thought in this day and age we were trying really hard to move away from "teaching to the test". The SOL doesn't actually measure how well a child has learned the material. It's total BS.

Parents, There is still hope to repeal this before it’s implemented:

To contact the Virginia Senate Committee on Education and Health, you can call Senate Committee Operations at (804) 698-7450, email Committeeoperations@senate.virginia.gov, or write to them at P.O. Box 396, Richmond, VA 23218

Can you provide a sample script or letter?

What’s your beef? I think middle class parents are mad that they can’t use their privilege to keep teachers mollycoddling their kids with As without effort and pushing back on any kind of accountability. If their kids where truly brilliant and get pass advanced in their sleep they wouldn’t care I fact they eWorld celebrate this as an easy W. But they aren’t!

This is only for SOL level classes. AP/IB don't have sols attached to them, students will have already taken/completed the sol level prereqs.

No clarity is provided for the new sol requirement as part of final grades. There has been no transparency.

Parents complain about grade inflation and then do everything they can to promote grade inflation!
