He interned the prior two summers doing software development work at my company (that probably helped too) but he wanted to do something in his field this summer.

The job market for web programmers is terrible - over supply. The job market for CS students who took the rigorous upper level CS electives remains good.
Separately, some here don't realize that Amazon intentionally has a big layoff every single year -- regardless of their profit or the overall economy.

He is into embedded systems and designs and programs hardware for robotic machinery they are developing. Will continue after graduation working 1/2 remote and 1/2 from Berkeley. Has stock options and is one the first 2 employees so he’s very excited. Initially was contacted about the position from one of the founders after seeing his personal website/portfolio and GitHub.

AI is not replacing that many workers at this pace. The reason for the layoffs is mostly due to budget issues, and the fact that companies like Meta are trying to pour money into their AI product and data centers.
Not worried (yet) about AI replacing workers right now. But, workers will need to know how to use AI in their jobs.

She’s losing to sorority girls at public unis. At a top LAC. Career ed says it’s not her but the job market. I also think it’s racism.
