Duke isn’t going to happen. Vandy probably isn’t going to happen, even ED. UVA ED probably is a reach—check with your school counselor—but a plausible one. W&M ED2 should happen.
The OOS public schools are a bit of a crap shoot, but a great Why Wisconsin? essay should get him in there—and it’s honestly kind of the perfect place for a kid with his interests.

Would they pick any of the OOS public schools if they get an acceptance to William and Mary or UVA? Of have they ruled out applying ED to UVA or William and Mary because they want to see Duke or Vanderbilt decisions play out?
Of the list Duke ED and Vanderbilt seem unlikely. Of the OOS public schools I would say there is a chance at all of them with UNC being the hardest to get into OOS but none of them are necessarily a given with high stats. With Michigan, the essays will matter and recommendations will be important.

Why would kid consider schools with such varying student population numbers? Such different experiences
Duh, looks like they are most of the best non-California, non-Ivy, & non-Catholic schools that have Div 1 sports & excellent academics.

This is what the northeastern parents use to hype. Taking most of the class ED, ten percent off wait list, and then loading up on a few hundred transfers isn’t anything to brag about, Vandy mom.

In my kid’s school, average students got into UGA oos.
I live in GA where a lot of public and private schools aren’t as competitive as schools in some other parts of the country. Wish that wasn’t the case but it’s true. It’s really about context. An “average” student at a top DMV private or public could be just as well prepared as the top student from an average GA public.

Agree that Duke ED is a no go. Vanderbilt or Michigan may work if ED. UNC is out of state is unpredictable.
