Yes this. We need to publicize this, bring it out of the darkness where it's traditionally kept secret. The more people know about this, the more we will be able to figure out how to stop it.

Reporting can put a victim at risk of violence, particularly when involves someone in their social circle, which is frequently the case. I would never second guess someone for being fearful of reporting.

I appreciate your concern, and can understand why you might think it would be obvious to just "go report". As a woman, there is an important aspect to the situation that might not be obvious to you and that is the possibility of "retribution" after a report is made. One might assume that justice would be swiftly served in these cases. Rather, rape kits sit dusty in warehouses like the final shot of Raiders of the Lost Ark. In the meantime, women are left vulnerable to the man's friends or anyone who may have an interest in protecting him. It's a frightening place in which to be. Around any corner might be someone who'd like to teach you a lesson. Also, I question how helpful "campus police" would be in many of these situations. You might be left going through the entire process with nothing changed other than a man who has it out for you even more. Again, frightening.

I say this as someone who has always been UMC and went to a college highly regarded by DCUM. As someone else said, money does not help.

I hope things are better (I have a daughter nearing college age)...but, I'm not so sure how much better. I do think there is more awareness, generally, and that is a step in the right direction.

I am really sorry that happened to you. I hope you have support from some corner of your life. You deserve it.

I am a woman and was also sexually assaulted by a woman, who was my boss at work. One of the worst things about it was not being believed or having it taken seriously, even though had a man done what she did, he would almost certainly have been fired and blacklisted. Instead people made excuses for the woman who SAed me and said I must have misunderstood. I ultimately left that job, humiliated, and she remained in her role and was even promoted after I left, despite everyone above her being aware of what she'd done.

Women can and do commit sexual assault, especially when they have power/leverage over their victims.

Agree. I think 100% of the women I went to college with heard inappropriate sexual comments, had their butt slapped, someone brushed against their boobs, or a guy rubbed his hotdog all over her on the dance floor - seriously this was true for every woman in college. I couldn’t even go for a run without being catcalled and I’m a homely conservatively dressed person. I’m from the 90s so baggy every thing back then with zero inappropriate skin showing.
