Have you looked into trade school? My uncle is associated with a big one. It's free and they actually pay the journeymen too while they're training. Their struggle is getting kids without records and who don't do drugs (homeowners don't want people with criminal records working in their houses while they're at work). Pay isn't bad while you're training and when you start your own plumbing/welding company later on, the money is great.

Friend of our's has a kid apprenticing in DC as an electrician right after HS. Makes like $52,000 first year. I have no idea if the parents knew someone to get their kid into the program or what.

of course the parents knew someone. My friend reached out to her vast fb& church& friends and family network to see if anyone had an internship in the area that her dc is studying. She found a paid internship for the summer for her child who is finishing their freshman year. Tale as old as time.

Agree and disagree.
My daughter has had no trouble each summer landing jobs. But then she goes out there physically walks into places. She's earned pretty well tutoring, babysitting, fast food, retail clothing, checking IDs at her school gym, interning abroad and being asked to organize events at local fraternities.
My son still believes in the online resume submission. He thinks networking is dirty. He hasnt' earned anywhere near his sister.

Your country must miss out on some brilliant kids who were deemed too poor for college. Is that India ?

I met seasonal young workers from eastern europe at a small town resort in VA. I do think teens in other parts of the world work as well as here. It's not because the family lacks, it's more for the experience of dealing with lots of different types of people if it's a retail job, understanding the discipline of showing up and being willing to do what everyone else is doing, and the travel opportunity (definitely summer teens worldwide working at the national parks). And oh yeah, the extra spending money that is their own to do as they wish and the camaraderie with other teens is great.
India's is a caste system and assigns way too much behavior to status. Why emigrate to another country if you insist on bringing over the ritual behavior and beliefs that continues to bog your country in 3rd world status?

Huh?? VA's minimum wage is $12.77. I'd LOVE to hire a babysitter for that amount. A teen costs $20 an hour, a seasoned babysitter on care.com is $30. No one is paying minimum wage. Dog walkers get $25 for a half an hour walk. (I have a 4lb dog and we've had to negotiate because my dog is completely not interested in anything more than a 10 minute walk, so I want the rest of the time to be spent petting or throwing her toys for her).

I typically hire teens because my kids think they're fun.

You have to consider their time to get to your house and to the next job. So, its not just 10 minutes. Plus, if they are driving, driving expenses.

Exactly, why are they charging $25 for 30 minutes, as they include that time when they determine their rate? Why would anyone want to walk your dog for $10 for 10 minutes, as it's not worth their time? They'd lose money. They are dog walkers, not sitters. They aren't going to sit there in your house, where you could accuse them of things, petting or hanging out with your dog.

A half-hour walk, if they have to go from house to house is really 45-60 minutes.
