Actually we will never know how selective it is because of their games.

I learned a lot from this site about college admissions so just trying to give back.

Sure people aren't dumb, but they clearly have different priorities. Co-op was not something that sold my kid on the school. It sounded gimmicky and shallow. He wanted to know about the actual college experience and quality of the professors. My kid attended a much higher ranked school and had internships in college...no problem. He did't need the built in co-op. I think we may have spent less in tuition as well!

There are some people with a weird fetish for supplemental essays. The whole purpose of these essays is for schools to select highly qualified students who are the right fit. It’s not meant to make students’ lives more difficult.

Northeastern is already doing an excellent job in this regard, and its retention rate is top-notch as a result. It's up there with T20 schools.

If a school picks the right students, they stay. Schools already have plenty of data and information to make these decisions; Northeastern doesn't need "dumb" supplemental essays to gather more information to pick the right candidates. Your numbers are off-4000 is almost double the real number for non-Boston starts.

In any case, it is totally common for state schools not to have supplementals. Some don't even accept the personal statement. There is a different expectation with selective private universities.

No one gets admitted to UVA Wise. A tiny number - and I mean tiny - like somewhere in the 75 range - do the "Year in Wise."

There is no comparison. NEU does it as an intentional effort of bolstering it's "low acceptance rate" while UVA actually has a low acceptance rate.

Everyone applied to art & science, and placed on waitlist is automatically eligible for Wise campus 1 year and transfer. It's just not that attractive unlike Northeastern programs.

Double Northeastern's acceptance rate, still lower than UVA.

Even if are artificially lowering the acceptance rate by a factor of 5 it’s still going to appeal to lots of kids, including mine. I think it’s lame that they (and other schools) play these games but it’s got plenty of strengths as well. Also, no one I know is choosing a school based on admission rate.
