We do a CSA for about 8 months of the year that is about $30 per week. On top of that we buy fruit and some supplements that we might need for recipes. But I doubt it comes to more than $50 a week. And the quality is really excellent.

The problem with planting my own tomatoes is that I get nothing until late July/August and then there’s a sudden glut.

It’s funny how shockingly cheap some things are — carrots, scallions, bananas. Apples have gotten crazy expensive though. I feel like they were cheap when I was a kid.

Costco is really the best go stuff like berries or mangos, and then just freeze what you can’t eat immediately. So much cheaper. Also pretty good for spinach. But not much cheaper for apples, for whatever reason.

$100/wk for 4 works out to like 3.50 a day per person—you could probably get it down to $2 or so, but I don’t think 3.50/day per person is crazy for fruits and vegetables. Another cheap vegetables are beans — they are so so healthy and if you buy them dried, super cheap. (Even canned is pretty cheap).

I never find gardens to be cost effective. Every year I plant tomato plants and it costs a bunch of money and I get maybe one big bowl of mini tomatos. My herb garden pays for itself though.

I believe I actually spend less over two weeks because the produce lasts. The stuff I get at the grocery store goes bad relatively fast. Sometimes in two days. I avoid food waste as much as possible.

Farmers markets are not where to buy if your goal is saving money. Most expensive produce ever

Seriously. The vegetables look like jewels and are priced accordingly.

+1

When I was a kid, the farmers markets has sometimes ugly looking fruits and vegetables though they tasted fine. Prices were great. Now everything has to look good
