Most parents whose seemingly high-stats kids got rejected by UMD only complain about their admissions criteria, instead of the quality of the school. But those parents whose kids are going to UMD like to exaggerate its quality.

From a research standpoint, UVA's quality seems exaggerated, but no one would say UVA is not a quality school.

My kid was accepted to UMDCP Honors and chose to attend GWU instead, Elliott School of International Affairs. My friend's kid was rejected at UMDCP and was accepted at Ohio State. A neighbor attended St Mary's College of MD and was happy there.

My high schooler's youth orchestra rehearsals are at Towson, and frankly, the campus is nothing to write home about. UMBC seems more modern - but we just had a glimpse of it during MCPS graduation.

Since UMD became more competitive UMBC seems to be the popular backup.

In our experience with a roommate and another friend, some chose it for a much better fit. Very different schools, that are not interchangeable for sure, but both with strong programming in STEM fields.

Not PP and my kid didn’t even apply to UMD. They are an athlete and were looking for a D3 school. Very happy as a freshman now - has made great friends, likes classes and finds them interesting, enjoys the beautiful campus. It is small and quiet, but they weren’t looking for a party scene.

Don’t get me wrong, I like those open-ended questions just as I like the Yale 35-word questions. But UMD is not in that league. Just saying.

UMD is highly sought after because it is a decent school with a very low price tag, not because of its outstanding academics.

Most people would disagree with your assessment. There's a reason why it is highly sought after.

It’s a throw your hat in the ring university, the only sought after part is the Honors College for instate. It has a lower yield than its neighbors in VA and NJ for both instate and OOS. It’s a fine school but lets keep things in perspective.

Interesting take. The yield rate for UMD and its comparable schools in VA (Virginia Tech) and NJ (Rutgers) are very similar. It's a great school and I'm sorry you're bugged by that.

No ones bugged by UMD, UMD posters just like to cherry pick stats. The data shows yield is lowest at UMD, it’s ok. Like I said fine school but terms like highly saught even for instate are a bit misleading.

There's nothing misleading about it being highly sought. You're the one that's fighting that truth. I don't get it

Rejected UMD. Accepted W&M, GWU, JMU, and Connecticut College. Attending W&M.

I don't think there's a human alive who is saying or thinks UMD is in the same league as an ivy, lol! Many sought after schools are not.

UMD is an R1 research university. Any R1 will be good.

Yale is fine but has Amy Chua on the faculty, along with her creepy husband, and they create weirdos like our VP.

Plenty of MAGA elite attended Yale.
