I think your neighbor's were rude and entitled to ask if they don't even really know you.
FWIW, DH has helped our neighbor a lot after they moved in, even helping chop down a tree, lending them tools, etc.. But we became friendly with them after they moved, and DH offered. They would not have asked if DH hadn't offered.

On my street we help each other out, especially a new neighbor. So maybe you loaned the machine, maybe you offer to use the machine on their yard (yes OP is scared of the snow blower). But I wouldn’t have let a new neighbor who asked for help leave without helping them make a plan.

Sometimes people get mad. I'm not gonna change my principles though. I'm that way to protect everyone.
I'm a lawyer, and I think you are ridiculous. Though I'm not an ambulance chaser, so maybe you have a better handle on things like this.
