I typically break the ice almost right away: "I'm American, but let's get one thing straight: I hate Trump."
That usually works.
That’s really crazy to start off breaking the ice introducing politics.
You don't understand. It's the ONLY way to truly break the ice when you're abroad. The man is almost universally reviled abroad, and as Americans we are associated with him. You have to address it head on, and fast. And there's never a risk of anything ugly happening when "politics" is introduced in this instance because virtually everyone is going to agree with you.
Crazy. I travel extensively too. No one cares about your politics best to do is to shut up and divert the conversation. Most of the time what you get is gabby cab drivers that are curious about Trump. The thing is, no one cares.

Meh. I feel like back then (Iraq, etc) people were critical of USA policies but not Americans. This is a whole different ballgame. And the only people who don’t think so are MAGA. Trump is going after allies. He is basically giving the middle finger to NATO. It’s so not the same. I think for now most people pity Americans but that might change once consequences of this new world order emerge in other countries.
You both say it’s not the same as before, but also that it “might change” at some point in the future? Try to actually think through your points before posting.
Like many DCUMers I’ve traveled extensively under Trump I and Trump II. There is nothing to worry about and this is all TDS.

I dislike trump immensely but many people are very happy maduro is out. I would NOT start off like this as someone who lives in Latin America

This is different. Trump is dangerously and has us on the verge of WWIII.

Any time I've seen anti American sentiment, it's had nothing to do with politics. It comes down to their own behavior. Being loud, not following the social norms of where they are, being disruptive, etc.
