+1. I'd overlook it once, but if that's a pattern, I'd find this irritating. And I had nannies for my kids, and did appreciate that one advantage was less exposure to all the little viruses going around. Of course, your kids may be building up better lifetime immunity -- who knows. But I think most of us recognize that everyone has some level of guilt or anxiety over their childcare, so it seems tone deaf at best, or snotty at worst.

It would be funny to me if not for the follow-up comment. Which I think is rude in any context. Imagine saying that to a SAHM or other nanny mom that’s bummed their kid is sick. It would still sound snotty (essentially “my nanny is more careful than you/your nanny”).

If it annoys you that she mentioned her nanny all the time, just change topic or give excuses to stop her. Or you can brag about how much your DC has learned at daycare, and how much socialization your DC has. We sent DCs to preschool even I stayed home, as school provides a lot more I couldn’t do. Same for a lot of neighbors / friends I know, some sends kids to daycare as young as 2 even they had nanny when kids were babies.

It's hilarious, but personally I might not make that joke with a new friend before understanding what her vibe is. I tailor my speech to whom I am speaking. One of my friends is very delicate and sensitive.

It’s only rude because she made the comment in a demeaning way that criticized your childcare choices.

My kids attended a part time preschool program after the baby years - I don’t think referring to the constant germs there as “kennel cough” would be insulting because generally people aren’t using part time preschool as childcare and it’s more of an enrichment thing.

OP is not really offended by "kennel cough." She's offended that this woman used the term while also talking up how her nanny is super careful in order to keep her kid from getting sick.

Had it been a fellow daycare mom who was like "oh no, I call that kennel cough, Larlo had it in September -- popsicles after dinner helped," OP would not have been offended. It was the comparison and condescension that made it offensive.
