My kid last year was rejected from his ED. He wasn't the type to keep checking his email. I had to remind him to look on the decision release day.

He is currently very happy at his target.

After attending admitted student events at his target, he said that if he had been WL at his ED and accepted in the summer, he would have still chosen the target! I was very pleased to hear him say that.

Impatient. On behalf of DS I'm feeling unpatient!

I have twins so we are waiting on an SCEA and an ED. I am anxiously waiting for "mid-December" to see how it shakes out. Both kids are taking a heavy senior year course load and are staying up late working on apps and doing homework. I am hoping that at least one will be able to enjoy their senior year and not have to spend winter break cranking out more essays.

Intellectually I feel exactly the same way! And also… I’m ready to know already and I’m really hoping my child will get their top choice.

This is our first and the waiting is torturous.

At my kid’s Catholic HS, midterm exams are 30% of the semester grade. 2nd quarter ends 2nd week of Dec with midterms 12/15 week.

Not even thinking of other apps until those are finished.

It worked out fine for older sib., doing additional apps over the 2 week Xmas break. We did not plan any trips.

My kid’s end of term projects/exams are mid December so trying to get essay drafts done this week. College counselor wants them before winter break for review so now is the best time.

DCPS ended Term 1 on Nov 3 and Term 2 doesn’t end until Jan 26. So the challenge was getting Term 1 work done when early applications were due but not a lot now. DC isn’t waiting for the ED decision to finish RD applications. I don’t see how you can wait. The ED is likely week of Dec 15-19 and holiday break starts Dec 19. If you aren’t ready to send apps out immediately, counselors won’t be there to do their part- especially if there is an ED2 letter that needs to get submitted. Many ED2 and RD deadlines pass before they return from break. My DC’s ED is a reach and kid is resisting making a decision whether to ED2 until the decision comes out. That makes sense except for the logistics since there may be no time to make that decision if it all has to happen in a day or 2 before break.

Similarly, my DS applied to Duke ED, and I do not expect an acceptance in December. DS also applied to 10 other schools by the EA deadline. So it's all a waiting game. Fortunately, we already got an acceptance so that took away some of the waiting stress.

Allay some of the stress by working on those other apps now.

Definitely do this.

But how do you get your child to work on RD apps over the next week without it seeming like 'My parents don't think I'm getting in to my ED'. I really hope they get in, but also want to be realistic knowing how rejective the school is.

From the beginning of the process we’ve talked about schools realistically. The plan was always to assume ED was a crapshoot and apply elsewhere. I think my kid has a decent chance at admission to their ED school, but they’re still working on other apps because who knows?

Exactly. That's not remotely unsupportive. Helping calibrate expectations is the best thing you can do for your child, so that there isn't a huge emotional crash if they don't get in. We knew our DC had an excellent chance of ED acceptance but we always hyped plan b and c options, just in case.

I'm feeling fat and depressed as a Federal employee, but ok about my child's shot at his ED school.
