But thin isn’t always better looking

I agree with both. Women want to look good AND thin isn’t always better looking.

This depends so much on build and how you carry weight (IMO). For me, any extra weight all seems to go to my upper half (stomach, breasts, back fat) and my face. I am naturally a little more apple shaped with a round face. So extra weight looks pretty unattractive and is also more unhealthy.

Many friends are at a healthy weight (though more than they would like) but more of a traditional bottom heavy build and look GREAT. And that is also a healthier weight distribution to my understanding.

It is not one size fits all.

Maybe they are walking around in the mall, gardening or work as nurse/fedex delivery gal. Exercise doesn’t need to be in the gym.

Not sure why you sound so testy. The posters I’m referring to said “I’m thin and don’t exercise”. I’m wondering why they don’t exercise….but thanks for chiming in, I guess…

France, Italy, Japan don’t have a big gym culture and people are thin, healthy and work less hours.

They eat less. You can’t eat like a pig and pretend to be a swan.

They don't necessarily eat less - they eat more nutritionally dense foods, that are not stuffed with excess calories. They also are much more active naturally in their everyday lives. They climb stairs, hills, clean their own homes, do their own yard work and gardening, etc.

Oh come on, they certainly eat less than typical American women. No other countries eat as much junk food as Americans do.

When I am fit and strong (23BMI) maxing out my 1reps my LDL is over 200.

In order to not die young and enjoy my fit lifestyle I actually need to bring that BMI down to 20.

Diet?

Home cooked meals, chicken, tofu, beans, super clean for my whole life.

Post 11/10/2025 16:29     Subject: Why are woman obsessed with being thin

A lot of us grew up with mothers or other female role models who were brainwashed to think their only value was their appearance and its ability to attract and keep a man. So those of us with thin moms often received the message that thinness was a virtue to be maintained at all costs, and those of us with overweight moms often received the message that weight gain was shameful and extra weight meant you no longer held value as a person. These messages are hard to disinherit.

Now, with the expectation that women can have it all, the public persona of the "have it all" woman is still that of a thin woman. This persists in retail, in pop culture, in film and television. A woman who is not thin rarely sees a positive picture of herself reflected back at her from popular media. The go-to insult for ANY woman, despite her accomplishments, remains one of two things: "you are fat" or "you are ugly."

Why are women obsessed with being thin? The better question is why are people in general so obsessed with women and their appearance?

Better looking than obese, as long as it’s not too thin.

I'm thin and also fit and strong, and I think I am attractive.

Also I don't think any of those things are relevant to my value as a person or are more or less worthwhile than what other people might spend their time on. Some people cannot get "fit and strong" in the way you are talking about because of disabilities -- these people can still be valuable, worthwhile, and attractive. Also some people do not expend as much energy on exercise as you and I do, and what they spend their time on instead may actually be more valuable and worthwhile than working out. A person could be out of shape and unhealthy but they could make beautiful and important art that changes lives. Or they might invent something makes life better for millions of people. Being fit and healthy is a laudable goal and it's good for you, individually, and benefits the people closest to you. But it's not essential to living a good or meaningful life.

I totally agree that being fit and strong should be everyone's goal and that a fit person is more attractive than a skinny person with no muscles. However, if you want to be as healthy as possible and reduce your risk of cardiovascular disease and other conditions that can not only reduce your lifespan but also can significantly lower your quality of life, it is important to limit visceral fat. To do that you have to be smart about nutrition. Most of us are overnourished.
