Full pay, white girl, science major (not engineering or CS).

How high or low should this applicant aim for ED or EA? I'm looking for feedback like don't EA/ED anything above USNWR 1-10 or no ivies except Cornell or Swarthmore but not Williams. We don't want her to aim too low but also don't want to aim too high and throw away the ED/EA.

I assume this is a Junior? Work on improving EC's. Don't give up on the leadership, why can't she seek a leadership position in one of her clubs as a senior? Usually, elections/appointments are spring semester. AO's like part time jobs, that shows responsibility and is not something most private high school students don't have them- does she manage anything, gotten a promo, what has she learned?
As to how high/low you need to see the Naviance data from your school which usually you will get access to at end of junior year. But in the meantime you could meet with the school counselor and ask. Frankly, I am probably more bullish than others, 1580 SAT is above the 75% for all Ivies and other top 20's and it is a metric where boys usually do better than girls and SAT is increasingly important. How are her AP scores?? A wall of 5's would help. While I think HYP aren't worth wasting your ED spot on I think you should add Penn and Columbia to the list of consideration (look at the departments in both in her major- likely better than Cornell).

Yes, good suggestion. A friend of DC's received a full tuition award with similar stats and good, but not super-impressive, ECs.

Thx. Not a DC-based mom and I made that helpful suggestion

If you are the top stem female in the class, maybe MIT. Odds are MUCH better for females. (Same with Caltech.)

Personally, I would ED to one of the following schools. (Ask counselor which schools like your HS):
Cornell
Columbia
Dartmouth
Penn
Northwestern

Or for slightly better odds:
Chicago
JHU

Avoid Brown. Females applicants at a disadvantage.

people have got to stop clowning. Jhu and chicago ed are largely more selective than NU and Cornell ED amongst others. idiot advice on here

No, for the one millionth time: If you attend one of many highly selective private high schools, Chicago is a relatively easy admit for student in the top 40% of the class. I do not know why but this is the case but it is. If you attend MCPS or FCPS then it appears to be just as difficult as NU or JHU or many Ivies.
But for whatever reason Chicago is the one top20 school that preferentially LOVES private school kids. At many privates, it is a much easier admit than it's neighbor Northwestern. From the schools my kids attend you literally need a 3.9 for NU (making it HYP level) and can get into Chicago with a 3.65. I have the data in front of me.

This will forever be a point of misunderstanding on here because the discrepancy is so large.

Yes you keep saying this and many of us with kids at such schools disagree with you. Perhaps identify the specific high school you are describing. It’s an anonymous forum after all

Look at Harvard Westlake data it is very clear what level students get into Chicago.

lol, could not pick a school less relevant to dcum.

Most of us private school moms aren’t from DC. There are a lot of us.

Current profile is very unlikely to gain admission to the majority of schools you listed. Good shot at Chicago. This is not 1990.

Make up some ECs. Some sob story ..For some schools like Harvard they are not looking for super sharp kids but a kid w/ managed credentials… such a sorry state of affairs.

I really hope you’re joking, PP. Making up credentials is both unethical and highly risky. We know a student whose admission offer was revoked after AO checked in with the high school counselor — one of the teacher rec letters conflicted with the student’s activity list.
