Fox Mill has a short bus ride to South Lakes, but Crossfield has a very long bus ride to Oakton. There's no excuse for keeping us at Oakton when there are now going to be three high schoolers that are much closer to our homes.
I keep hearing that the Crossfield parents want to stay at Oakton........is there a split opinion based on grades? (i.e. 4th and below want to go to the new high school and 5th/6th want to stay at Oakton)?
We want to stay at Oakton because it is a known high performing school that many of us bought houses specifically to attend. The dream is Crossfirld Carson TJ but it won’t happen for all. So Oakton is the next best alternative. Western is a cluster of unknowns.
Sounds like your kid is not yet in school--and that you value long, long bus rides over quality of life for your child.

They will never send Crossfield kids to SLHS. Like they will never send Great Falls kids to Herndon.
I don’t see it happening and this feels more like fearmongering.

Pupil placement rules for IB/AP are the student goes to the closest HS with the program and available space. As long as SLHS stays IB, has space, and IB's not added at a nearer HS, SLHS would be where students from the Floris area IB pupil place to.Anonymous wrote:Anonymous wrote:Anonymous wrote:Anonymous wrote:Anonymous wrote:Anonymous wrote:Option "A+Floris" should alleviate the worst of the western Oakton bus issue, and allows Meren to not lose all of the SLHS kids since she can keep Fox Mill.
Would this split Crossfield ES in a big way, or would the feeder % be somewhat balanced across Oakton and Western HS?
I think it keeps Crossfield together except for Fox Mill Woods--which is already separate. So, split between WesternHS and South Lakes.
I think it's important to maintain continuity for all South Lakes students. People prepare for the IB program starting in 7th grade, it's not fair to rezone them.
Then if they want to stay at SLHS just for IB they can transfer in from Western.
Also no one is preparing for IB exams in 7th grade and only classes can take in MS are math and language which translate easily to AP schools.
My kid knew by 6th grade he wanted to go IB (we are a Floris family, neighborhood zoned for Oakton until Westfield was built).
Principals came from Westfield and SLHS to talk at a PTA meeting when he was in 6th that they encouraged students to attend and ask questions. He did an cememted his decision. We pupil placed to SLHS for IB.
I'm assuming that would still be a choice once it's official our neighborhood is going to the new HS.

Option A--plus all of Floris makes the most sense. It eliminates split feeder at Floris and makes the most sense geographically. It gets Franklin Farm off the bus to Oakton.
Options C and D are awful No way should they have Discovery Square staying at Westfield:
1. It is one of the two closest neighborhoods to the Western High School
2. It would be the only neighborhood north of 50 going to Westfield--which isolates the students from the rest of their school community.
Option B will take way too many kids out of South Lakes.
Option A + Floris makes sense for people on this board and a lot of people predicted that would be a proposal.
But it turns out that was not even one of the four options. People on this board need to start thinking like the board members.
Someone wondered why they keep grouping a portion of Floris with Fox Mill. But if my understanding is correct, that part of Floris is in the Hunter Mill district along with Fox Mill.
People on this board also appear to assume SLHS shouldn’t lose Fox Mill. But it’s very hard to imagine SLHS parents that are in Reston and not part of this boundary change would actively ask Meren to let Fox Mill stay in SLHS.
This boundary adjustment is very different from the previous one where the SLHS PTA took such an active role. I am not even sure if the Reston parents that are not part of the boundary changes are invited to the community meetings in November.
Meren will want to keep Fox Mill. Fox Mill is closer than the Floris kids that go there. Some of Fox Mill is just as close to South Lakes as Carson.
Some people keep saying that but I haven’t seen any concrete evidence to support that claim.
