DP but I agree. Not every kid with good grades and top test scores is super studious. They are clearly bright but not a fit for a top school. I personally know a lot of kids like this.

I know, right? I have to doubt a lot of these “help with daughter whose main goals are football, warm weather and fraternities. Not super studious “. They then go on to claim excellent grades and top test scores. Someone’s lying.


Lots of pps have spoken up who have kids like this. Sounds like you may not know kids like this but they do exist and we really took seriously finding someplace that was a fit for his temperament rather than just making a list based on his gpa and sats (because a really intense school would have made him miserable.)

Any of the UC's, including UCB and UCLA. The bottom 25% of these schools have average SAT scores below 1350. You'll find plenty of non-pointy end, well-rounded company.

I’d suggest UC Santa Barbara or UC Davis. You won’t get in without a 4.0 unweighted in state but out of state 3.84 should be fine. UCs all have a similar gen ed requirement so it gives her time to choose a direction.

DD was similar, a bit lower scores, and absolutely killed it at UMiami. The best $$$$ we ever threw at a problem. She’s been well-employed, great group of alum friends, got an MBA at a T10. Can’t say enough good things. But this was pre-COVID era.

FWIW, if your kids wants to take advantage of disability services at their college (both of my ADHD kids did), you will need testing.

One of the issues with DCUM is that so many posters live in Lake Wobegon, where all of the children are above average. Even the special needs kids who live in LW are always 2e.

Not every bright kid is hyper-motivated and suitable for a cut-throat academic environment. Many bright students will have a best fit college that is supportive rather than cut-throat.
