Does it matter that in some states the tax on gas is higher than the actual petro? In Maryland its $0.46 per gallon. In California its $0.71 per gallon

They’re trolls who come here to “own the libs.” Don’t pay attention to them.

Just a reminder of this long thread during the Biden Administration about the coming $7/gal prices coming (that never came)

If the government subsidizes for oil were removed gas would be $12-$14 a gallon. Why do conservatives love to pick and choose the winners in the economy? No free market here. Trump takes equity positions in private companies, subsidize US soybean farmers for the Chinese, sells TikTok worth 100-220 billion to his friends for 14 billion, bails out Argentina(the main competitor in the soybean market) the tune of 20 billion, takes cash payments from the Saudis and Qatar, orders the DOJ to pay him $230 million, has made millions with Putin, etc, etc

What specific subsidies are you referring to?

Different poster but...

US fossil fuel subsidies include direct financial incentives, tax breaks like expensing for intangible drilling costs, and indirect benefits like reduced royalty rates on federal land leases. Other subsidies include tax credits for specific activities, like carbon capture, and lower prices for public lands, which are often considered direct subsidies, while other subsidies are more complex or indirect, such as the costs of protecting global oil supplies or dealing with pollution and climate change.

Explicit subsidies

Tax breaks: The US tax code contains special provisions that directly benefit the fossil fuel industry, such as the expensing of intangible drilling costs (IDCs) and the percentage depletion allowance.

Tax credits: A federal tax credit is available for capturing carbon, and other tax breaks exist for specific activities like the production of metallurgical coal.

Leasing and royalty rates: The government provides fossil fuel companies with access to public lands at below-market rates, including artificially low lease prices and royalty rates.

Direct appropriations: Direct financial support from the government to the fossil fuel industry is provided through direct appropriations.

State-level exemptions: Subsidies also exist at the state level, such as property tax exemptions for certain facilities like liquefied natural gas (LNG) plants in states like Texas and Louisiana.

Implicit and indirect subsidies

Public health and environmental costs: These are the "implicit" subsidies that occur when the price of fossil fuels does not include the costs of negative externalities like air pollution, climate change, and traffic congestion. The IMF estimates that these costs reached $7 trillion globally in 2022, with a significant portion attributable to the US.

Infrastructure and military costs: Other indirect subsidies include the cost of infrastructure maintenance for the fossil fuel system and the significant US military spending on protecting global oil supplies and shipping routes.

Cleanup of abandoned wells: The government's role in cleaning up abandoned oil and gas wells and other environmental remediation can also be considered an indirect subsidy.

Support for low-income households: Programs like the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) provide public assistance for energy costs, which supports continued consumption of fossil fuels, but not renewables.

What policies did Trump enact to lower gas prices?

His tariffs are crashing the economy which means lower demand for fossil fuels, hence the lower cost for a gallon of gas.

This is just an example of how low some people’s expectations are. Sad, really. We need group therapy as a country.

They are making it up with taxes on electric and hybrids, even high fuel mileage cars.

Every time I drive over a bridge, I get a little nervous now. I can’t believe the “greatest”
country is like a a foreclosed rental.

Yeah, I don't get it either. But I guess Trump doesn't have much else to toot his horn over, so $0.12 a gallon is it.
