Fascinating creatures.
I think the Delaware state website has info every year about where and when exactly.

I second this. I saw tens of thousands of horse shoe crabs on the beach at Slaughter Beach Delaware.

OP, Chincoteague and Assateague are not far and are in Maryland and Delaware.

On your way stop at the Salisbury Zoo in Salisbury Md. It is free and worth a couple of hour visit.

Chincoteage and Assateague for wild ponies.

You can camp on the beach at Assateague and sometimes the ponies will come up to the campground.

Pp here - and bear point Reyes in Petaluma is American Made Miniatures which does a great tour though sometimes has to cancel a few days out due to weather so is less of a sure thing.

Probably worth waiting until they are quite a bit older (you have to be 8 but older is probably better) but I just took my animal loving DD to the Farallon islands for her 13th birthday. You can’t go on them, but tons of animals to see on the way out and back. I live in the Bay Area, but you could combine it with a visit to Point Reyes which is also great for observing animals.

Someone already mentioned, but as a true Disney hater, I will say their safari at Animal Kingdom was super impressive. Easy trip.
