Prepare for this??? REALLY? Some of the pompous attitudes and comments are tone deaf....so great you have $1M in the bank.... what happens when that runs out? Do YOU want someone to tell you that you should have "prepared" for it? SMH

Ask to take furlough leave. My office has been granting all requests.

Which supervisor annoys you most? Maybe there is some small way to make their life a bit more miserable today (or in the future).

OP, it sucks, but this admin is looking for excuses to fire people. If you need your job, go in.

All this talk makes me think it is worth filing for unemployment and dealing with paying it back if/when we get paid.

Depends on which state you live in if you can actually do this.

Yes, I know people who have already done this. I think it’s smart. Pay it back later if/when people get back pay.
You can file if you work in DC, VA or MD, so your snarky caveat does not apply to me or the DCUM audience.

Wrong. You are totally free to take a new job. If you choose to work for free in hopes of future payment, that is your own decision.

I’m one of a small handful of exempt workers at my agency - everyone (furloughed or not.) was instructed to fill out time cards through the end of Sept and leave the rest blank. We are manually keeping track of hours spent on our special project to code it correctly when government reopens

No one is forcing anyone to do anything. You can work for free in hopes of getting paid in the future, or you can quit and get a new job. It's a sucky situation, but you have options.

Agree. And while the current administration is purely awful and evil, the above has always been true. It isnt new that federal employees are subject to shutdowns. You could have prepared for this. And you can even now quit if it doesn't align with your career needs.

To clarify, you are a DoW employee, not a DoD employee. Get your facts straight.

Legally still DoD. DoW is for the MAGA morons.

Legally it is the DoD, but the Department identifies as the DoW. Stop deadnaming the DoW.

Just cause mommy married a drunk pedophile, doesn’t mean the kids need to change their name to his.
