Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police – Collision Reconstruction Unit (CRU) are asking for the public’s help to locate a hit and run driver, following the death of 52-year-old Ganga Prajapati of New Carrollton, who was fatally struck on Tuesday, September 23, 2025. The driver of the striking vehicle left the scene after the collision.

At approximately 7:27 p.m., Montgomery County police 4th District officers and Fire Rescue personnel responded to Veirs Mill Road at Ennalls Avenue in Wheaton for the report of a pedestrian struck by a vehicle. Responders located Prajapati in the roadway with critical injuries. She was transported to an area hospital, where she later died of her injuries.

The investigation has revealed that Prajapati was struck by the driver of a silver 2009–2012 Audi A4 or S4 traveling eastbound. The vehicle is believed to have damage to the windshield and the right front fog light assembly. Additional evidence points to damage to the left front headlight assembly, with the headlight possibly hanging, and the passenger side fog light assembly missing.

CRU detectives are asking for the public’s assistance in identifying the suspect vehicle. Anyone with information about this collision or the involved Audi is urged to call CRU...

This remains an active and ongoing investigation.

Suggesting pedestrians waive a flag as they cross the street is a laughable "solution" for protecting them from dangerous operators of two ton murder machines. I didn't suggest this -- it already exists at the Kensington location and places in Chevy Chase. I am a very slow walker, and I think I would find it useful to be able to wave a flag to make sure drivers are paying attention to me.

Of course, this is a supplement and not a replacement for a safe, well-engineered traffic intersection. Only a revolting pile of human waste would think otherwise.

Because there's no businesses or churches on those blocks. Heck, most of the houses there don't even face University and the side streets don't cross over it.

Sorry maybe I’m confused. Are you saying University doesn’t have or need cameras because there are no businesses or churches? Like the 7-11 a kid got killed trying to get to? There’s also a bank, a vet, and a church on University. Plus kids crossing to get to Einstein. South Kensington also has pedestrian activated crossings and regular traffic lights to stop traffic allowing pedestrians to cross. University Blvd has none of that for approximately 3/4 of a mile.

Both Einstein and the 7-11/Bank are different intersections. All the intersections you are talking about have streets that cross University and are commercial areas. That stretch has neither.

It was a horrible tragedy and my deepest sympathies and condolences go out to the family but that is not an intersection that needs a traffic light and none of the comparable stretches of either University or Connecticut have one.

What that stretch needs is better lighting not another traffic light in a location without a cross street.

St. Paul is the crossing for Kensington Heights Park.

St. Paul is a crossing for many kids to go to Einstein High School.

St. Paul is the closest crossing to the East of the 7-11. Einstein kids living south of University all live east of St. Paul so it’s the nearest crossing en route.

St. Paul is the crossing for many to get to the public bus stops there on both sides of University.

St. Paul does not cross over University. That is why there is not a traffic light.

The neighborhoods on both sides of University were developed to be inward facing and are not connected.

The entrace to Kensignton Heights Park is not on University.

Crossing University there is a short cut but the area was not planned or developed to have that as a regular crossing.

There is a good case to be made for connecting the roads on either side of University. It is odd that none of the streets cross over along that stretch. There is also a good case to be made for a pedestrian triggered stop light, assuming that connecting the roads on either side is too difficult, but not an always on one.

But, these sort of solutions can't happen when there's a subset of people flooding the messaging with exaggerated and f-cars bs.

The busy roadway has been problematic for a while. There’s been a lot of accidents at this intersection - University West and St. Paul.
The main issue is speeding.

People are going 50 or 60 on a 30 MPH road.
A speed camera was recently removed from the area. Ever since, motorists have been speeding through.

Residents of the community are asking to have the speed camera reinstalled. Speed cameras are moved to different locations regularly. Do what you can to get this reinstalled!

Public officials ALWAYS take out speed cameras, installed for "safety," when drivers adapt and quit speeding near the cameras, and then, the cameras no longer bring in enough money. Once that happens, everyone starts speeding again.

And that leads to tragedies such as this.

Einstein, Wheaton, Northwood, and multiple other schools have dangerous crossings with no guards, no sidewalks and no buses.
