Narrow Road to the Deep North - an Australian novel about a prisoner of war in Burma.

These are both such great recommendations! As others noted, not the choice for if you’re looking for things to get sunnier at some point.

I recommend the Regeneration trilogy by Pat Barker, which like Narrow Road will scratch that pacifist itch. Also:

Our Spoons Came From Woolworths by Barbara Comyns
The Children of Dynmouth by William Trevor
84 Charing Cross Road by Helene Hanff
The Remains of the Day by Kazuo Ishiguro
Anything by Claire Keegan
Patience by Toby Litt

MAGA?
Your mind is devoured by Trump who lives in your head 24x7. Your logic is wrong.

If I read Das Kapitel by Marx would that make me a Democrat? If I read The Necroscope by Bryan Lumley does that make me a weirdo?

Don’t be silly. People read all kinds of books, even from perspectives they don’t agree with.

Atlas Shrugged came out long before Trump. I doubt someone read it because he is president.

I think you need to go to the political forum where you can rant and rave about MAGA, screaming at the walls (in an institution?), stomping your feet in a tantrum angry that your team lost the political Super Bowl.

Politics is a game run by the wealthy. We are not on the field playing able to affect the outcome by scoring goals. We are not calling the shots. The sooner you realize that your blood pressure will go down.

Whenever someone mentions Ayn Rand or David Foster Wallace, I assume they’re a self important douche. Or a libertarian. Which is the same thing really, isn’t it?

Self important douchebaggery is very on brand for teens, which is when most of us read Ayn Rand. I read it the summer before college. It was convincing to my squishy teen brain, and made me feel strongly about things. So I don't automatically shit on the person who listed it here. I also recognize that it's for simple people, which, again, most of us were at one point! Only simple people keep believing in it after college, of course.

We read Ayn Rand in 12 grade and the whole class loved it. I remember our English teacher saying it’s difficult to be a good parent and believe in the Ayn Rand’s principles. But I didnt really understand what he meant until much later than 12th grade.
