Open streets is not a street fair. I'm guessing he's near the 5th Ave or Vanderbilt Ave open streets, both of which have awesome programming for kids. Street fairs have stalls and generic vendors, open streets has local bands, restaurants with seating in the streets, and programming like this: https://www.dshnyc.org/events

Go for lunch and spend a few hours if you're hanging out with him, it's such a fun NYC thing.

That's my point. BIL sent us a flyer for this open streets thing that prominently features drag storytime, but when I looked up the event separately, drag storytime is barely mentioned. Which makes me think he's just trying to be controversial by choosing that flyer over the more accurate marketing materials for the event.

My kids don't enjoy street festivals really. They get hot and it tends to be more focused on adult activities including drinking, with only a few activities for kids for which there are often long lines. I don't have issues with drag story time but wouldn't want to build that into my NYC trip either -- there are multiple drag story times in DC if that's something we want to do. My kids would want to do Central Park, the Empire State Building, and Broadway. Yes, cheesy, but they are kids. They do not have sophisticated tastes.

This visit is going to end up in tears.

When people come visit me in Nova, I take them to the touristy DC stuff. Smithsonian museums, the zoo, the major monuments. With kids, I might not suggest Arlington Cemetery, because it's a lot of walking and not a lot for kids to do. But I'm not going to suggest the Fall Fest in my neighborhood, because that's not why people visit DC, and part of being a good host is knowing your audience.
