I saw several ICE vehicles harassing people on 395S today in nova near Springfield (slowing down and looking into vehicles, blocking lanes with their multi-vehicle caravan etc).
I don’t understand how they can just stop people and insist on proof of citizenship.

Yes everyone(not just the driver) has to show ID and proof of citizenship. A real ID is not proof of citizenship. You also have to give a reason why you are traveling- where you are going, who you are meeting, where you are coming from, address of employer, etc. They can impounded your car and take your phone if ICE or Customs and Border Protection (CBP).
You never have to answer any questions. It's called the Fifth Amendment.

"Everyone in the United States, regardless of their immigration status, has the right to remain silent when questioned or arrested by law enforcement. D.C. police cannot order you to show identification, according to the American Civil Liberties Union of D.C., with the exception of a driver’s license during a traffic stop. Federal immigration officers, however, can ask to see immigration documents.
Police can ask you questions in a public place. The National Immigrant Justice Center recommends avoiding arguing with authorities or running away. You can calmly say “I don’t want to talk to you” or “I don’t want to answer that."
...If an immigration officer asks to see documents verifying your immigration status — such as a passport, green card or employment authorization form — and you are not a U.S. citizen, you must show them if you have them with you, according to Monica Hopkins, executive director of the ACLU of D.C. If you do not have them, you can say you want to remain silent, she added. “Do not lie about your status or present fake documents,” she said in an email....
“Your rights remain the same no matter which law enforcement agency stops you,” Hopkins said."
Okay sure. If you resist you will get arrested for federal resisting arrest and/or obstruction charge. These are usually charges police tack on to people who talk back or the police have a very weak case against and dropped in a plea bargains. In the case of federal resisting arrest 1-20 years and fines up to $250,000. Federal obstruction charges are up to 30 years. Funny these were not used on the Jan6’ers. Oh and the federal law enforcement can only charge felonies in DC.
So stand there and argue the 5th and you will be arrested. The just arrested a guy who was filming an arrest. They have been transferring people to places like Texas or just lose you in the system. The few people who get out of the DHS system tell of a hell hole conditions. Your lawyer will not be able to find you.
The judicial branch is lining up with Trump. All those Federalist Society judges are real excited about backing Trump on these new powers. The constitution is pretty much nonexistent any more. This is what authoritarianism is. You can quote the constitution but when was the last time you saw a republican talking about constitutional rights?

OK, can someone clarify what is accepted as proof of citizenship? Am I supposed to carry my passport?

Anonymous wrote:No American carries their passport or birth certificate with them at all times. So ICE must be accepting REAL IDs. Immigrants often cannot get REAL IDs. I don't have one: I have a valid driver's license that is not compliant for federal identification, because I am a green card applicant. I carry my work permit with me, since it's the same format as a driver's license and just takes up a credit card slot. Maybe I should carry my passport with me from now on, which is such a pain. I don't want it stolen...

No.

Yes. Read this:

It's not stop-and-frisk. It's "100 Mile Border Zone".

I'm not letting my ADHD kid walk around with the only copy of his birth certificate that we have! Obviously, the birth certificate doesn't have a photo, so it could be anyone's anyway, right?
This isn't supposed to be a problem in the USA.

Are you asking for the opt-out button for fascist takeover?
Where do you think you can safely hide?
Well, I get texts alerting me to possible flash floods, I get them for missing children, I get them for all kinds of reasons. Why can't I get them for checkpoints?
Those alerts exist because the government has an arrangement with the cell phone carriers that allows it to occasionally commandeer their cell towers to issue those kind of warnings to all phones in the relevant area. Obviously the government isn't going to do that to alert you to its own checkpoints.
I dont think they envisioned the government sending the texts (although why not the DC government?). The idea is that someone creates a way to do this. I get texts for a lot dumber stuff.
