Keep in mind median household income for Americans 77K for a family. That means half the country makes less. The cultural differences between families above and below the 6 figure mark is enormous. Honestly, it feels like a bigger cultural shock than going abroad.


The poor eat McDonald's/fast food as a treat. It is their "eating out"

Upper class eat McDs for convenience, when they are shuffling kids between soccer practice and dance class. If they want to eat out, they go to an actual restaurant, often weekly or multiple times per week.

Panera was SOOOO good when it was Saint Louis Bread Company, before it was bought out by Panera and the menu destroyed.

The bread was baked fresh daily starting at 3AM, they made soups from scratch instead of reheated from a giant plastic bag, and they had flavored cream cheese hand mixed every morning.

Panera ruined St. Louis Bread Co.

I ate at McDonalds twice in one day last week during a road trip. I had an Egg McMuffin with no meat, a black coffee, a snack wrap without the nasty sauce, and water. It was fine but Im not exactly craving more. I get a hot fudge sundae every couple of years.

Yup. McD replaced a lot of smaller diner etc where it was cheap to get a small meal - toast, coffee, one egg that a lot of elderly and lonely people had and a place to sit down that wasn't their home. The tastee diner in silver spring was always full of white haired people reading the newspaper early weekend mornings, they walked from the retirement home apartments. When it closed, I have no idea where they go now.

I don't go to McDs more than twice a year tops. And then for hash browns on the early drive to the beach. Also don't smoke. It's just not my thing. I do love my some Arby's fries though and eat potato chips and a regular Sunday bagel etc.

Have you been to France? Because I was directing that to the OP who said They were from France. Because if you have been there you would know that everybody smokes. You can smoke most places, including places for kids. We have been twice and will never go back to France and a couple other places in Europe because the smoke is literally unbearable. I was simply making a comparison that sure-the US is known for fast food and huge portions and over eating, But France has its own issues with health too-it’s just different.

I don't go as often and will soon quit going entirely - even on road trips - if the minimum human contact kiosk systems continue with really horrible service. Maybe I'll drive-thru under a blue moon, since drive-thru customers are the priority for most of these places now. If you didn't pre-order, you can't park anywhere near the entrance and if you go in, you are last to be serviced; and kiosk-ordering is the worst.
