The rigor, grading, content and expectations are significantly higher at TJ. At base HS, it was at most 30 minutes of effort at home per week to get an A and that is often close to 100% of total points due to bonus points on tests, etc.

My kid struggled with the rigor at TJ and would've been absolutely fantastic at base, top 5% then comfortably get into UVA. Instead the mental torture and agony was too much for all of us, with the hit on GPA, ending up getting into a school that ends up being bottom safety for TJ kids. That said, fast forward 4 years of college was a breeze with all the tough courses, and now sitting pretty with job offers from 3 top tier companies in senior year. DC was saying it's like getting admission from Harvard, Princeton, and Yale. This would not have happened if not for TJ and the peer group acquired from there. They stuck together, helped, pushed, and motivated each other, without possibly saying anything. It's been a long 8 years, although if the ultimate goal is landing on a career with the top employers in STEM, then TJ has worked out. I am sure base HS would also be okay, however, the peer group is something when you connect with the right friends at TJ.

Genuine question. Would any of the above mentioned be attending UVA if accepted? My own super high stats daughter with excellent and long term ECs, NMF, etc. applied ED to UVA. Didn’t want to chance it and didn’t want her parents to pay 90k+ for private. We are full pay. She’s a practical kid. Accepted as an Echols Scholar. Going into her second year and is happy as a clam. The great resources, opportunities, professors, etc. are beyond plentiful.

If you love UVA, apply ED.

I don’t disagree that any average TJ kid would be at the top 5% of a base HS. However, my Langley kid with full load of AP classes does not spend only 30 min of effort for an A. That is just rude and insulting. My kid would have been TJ material. He wasn’t interested and we didn’t push him.

We hear this every year. There just isn't room at UVA for 200 TJ kids and they have to make tough choices amongst a pool of amazing young people coming out of TJ.

No. It gave me insight into how more than a dozen classes that are supposedly the same were taught and graded.

Base HS classes are much easier.

My impression too, also having one TJ kid and one base school kid. Yes I think my TJ kid would have been much higher ranked if she stayed at the base (just much less happy).

DP here. Seems accurate to me. If your kid isn’t in the top 30% at TJ or top 10-15% at another VA high school, you are not getting into UVA.

If you are not fcps and different system, I’m sure that 4.3 gpa would be higher but at TJ, that seems low for a top school.

At UVA orientation this year, the Director of Admissions said that more than 90% of students entering in the Class of 2029 were in the top 10% of their high school class.

VT Engineering is a tough admit. VT Agriculture or other is a visibly easier admit. This contributes to the wide spread on the VT scattergram.

I was very surprised to learn many TJ students are really targeting medical or dental school -- instead of targeting a career in engineering. I am told that the TJ students applying to non-Engineering parts of VT (e.g., some pre-med major) have a much easier time with acceptances.

If you are surprised, you do not know many Asian parents then. Med school track is why so many TJ kids go to Pitt. No one goes there for engineering.

Pitt — > Pre Med for TJ kids.

VCU is also a target school for pre-med

Yes, lots of bio-interest kids at TJ; not all STEM is engineering.
