Ah. See, you’re confusing “iconic” — tourist restaurants with “American” food. There are lots of great places to eat in DC with American food that OP hasn’t been to, and probably overlooks, possibly deliberately. Ruff N Ready serves American food. The Hitching Post is an American restaurant. Horace and Dickie’s is an American restaurant. Supreme Barbecue is an American restaurant. What’s “embarrassing “ is how limited your working definitions of “American “ food are.

I hate the Delaware beaches. Nothing nice or exciting about them. Can’t imagine why anybody would buy a beach house there.

I offered Mountain Dew to some of your kids at my son’s fifth grade birthday party. They accepted of course. One had never had any kind of soda before, a few others had only previously had sprite.

PP you replied to. Well of course I'm not from here. I'm not American. But I have lived here for 20 years! I like doing tourist things, like going to see the cherry blossoms and wandering around the Smithsonian museums. I am not particularly interested in local "lore". I think that's what OP was referring to - things that are famous, but just for locals.
