Why post this ?

You really need a hobby.

This must be "sophistication" mom.

NP here. I think you must be misinterpreting "sophistication" mom's post. She was saying that her not-sophisticated-enough-yet kids prefer places like Venice to places like Salzburg. Her kids "need stuff to do" rather than just appreciating the "culture and museums." Her kids are 12 and 14... it is not shocking that they are not yet worldly enough to appreciate certain places. Personally, I thought her opinion was valid and useful to consider when traveling with kids. But, as the "sophistication" mom said: "Know your audience, maybe your family will love!"

Would love to travel by train from Geneva and avoid airports. Don't mind staying within Switzerland, or traveling to France or Italy. Really trying to stay away from the big cities since it is the height of tourist season.

I do like exploring little villages, eating good meals, and would love to be able to rent a bike for a day or two.

Any suggestions?

Annecy is a great option from there. Bus is easy and the fastest way- Flixbus probably the simplest, should be 45-60 minutes. There is a pretty commuter train now running, but it takes a pretty roundabout route and thus takes 90 minutes- the Leman Express.

Once in Annecy the main part of the city is small and easily walkable. Can rent bikes and ride everywhere, and going down either side of the lake is your best option. Lots of nice places to hang out in Annecy itself, or bike to one of the towns along the lake. Bring bathing suits (and towels if you can), there are some beaches along the lake and it will be warm enough to swim. There are probably some transit options to go up the mountains also, but not quite sure about those, have driven up when in that area.

whyyyyy do americans like annecy? it is horrible- midtown on a lake. Geneva is ok- go to Zermatt if in the French area & Chillon.

have you thought of going to montreux? my kids love the castle. theres a lot of infrastructure to support getting to the viewing points in grindlwald area & Lucerne for visitors with limited mobility. also its a small country- good medical care is plentiful & drs speak English.

We were there for a week with an 11 year old. Swimming in lake Zurich, also small rivers in town. FIFA museum. COOP for groceries, sprungli for sweets and then the famous white sausage place. We walked everywhere. Ride bikes. Spent 3 days lounging at the lake in a heat wave and soaking up normal Swiss life. Went to countryside and got scenic train. We were on a budget and it was still slow travel heaven

Go in to see the rest of Switzerland! It’s not boring at all. It’s gorgeous and full of adventure and our kids loved it.

Geneva is fantastic for shopping. Specifically, buying a watch...

Shopping on vacation is not my idea of a fun vacation. Very American though.

Im sure zurich is worth a day or two but I haven’t been there, always just pass by it or in and out through the airport.

Do you have any recommendations for Chamonix or the French Alps, particularly in summer with kids? Considering it for a family vacation b/c it's cheaper than Switzerland.

Lauterbrunen, Ballenberg.

Side trip to Annecy (France) for SUPing or padel boats on the lake, followed by gelato in Old Town.

Believe it or not, the lion monument in Lucerne is really worth a visit. Very moving.

To me Switzerland is not in the least boring. I love hiking and mountain scenery.

Expensive, yes. Boring, no.

I think it is.
I can’t even plan a trip there.

I love watching mountains but I can only watch so much. I don’t like hiking, I get cold easily. I don’t like to look at castle. After ten of them, they look the same to me. I am more of a beach person. My ideal vacation would be beach diving, swimming, spa, shopping eating. Rinse and repeat.
I also enjoy traveling to china and India. India I love rural area, pilgrimage to Buddhist relics, eat Indian food and sip chai tea.
So yeah, just nothing much to do in Switzerland for me that I can’t do else where.
