platitudes are easy.

Agree. I think people say stuff like this out of fear. I pity them; what a difficult way to live. And I believe God is real. But saying a platitude prayer for a stranger accomplishes nothing except navel gazing, which I'm not sure God would look favorably on - but who am I to say? She talks to me in my deepest moments. I assume she does this with others too, so it's up to them to believe or not. It's not up to me to have a relationship for them.

You see pretty sure God is a woman. Kinda kinky.

Why are you a sexist? Why do you assume God is not a woman?

Why would God have a gender at all? It's not like it has to engage in sexual reproduction.

Good point! God did have a son, though, - Jesus - and God chose a woman to bear the child, so God must be a guy, right? And back in those days, guys were really in charge of everything, so chances are, God was a guy.

And this is where the old mythic story tellers demonstrate their stories are made up and not the work of a god. At a minimum, Jesus should have been a woman. They could have at least convinced some of a virgin birth through parthenogenisis and give more credibility to the claim. However, since we are dealing with a male dominant pastoral society, of course they were sexist and their character is male.

Previous post also ignores the fundamental question of why would some supreme entity have a sex? It doesn't procreate. It doesn't need to. Sex traits would be unnecessary. Sex evolved in species on Earth to have increased variability in offspring to increase chances of survival. What purpose would that have for "God"?

Actually, it's where you demonstrate how to argue from a false premise. The faiths you are discussing do not in fact ascribe a gender to God, in spite of how various ancient writers and translators used language. And the fact that ancient languages were gendered does not argue for or against the existence of God, which was OP's topic.

In the Christian and Jewish faiths, God does not have a gender; humans write the way they write and speak the way they speak, for the convenience of their time and teaching, but God is not human. There are few to no religions that ascribe a human gender to God (as opposed to God mad man in Jesus, distinct within the trinity which include non human God and the Holy Spirit, in some religions).

Now, I would assert that if you are arguing about this without knowing this really basic fact, you would benefit from more studying to know what you are even arguing about.

Then you are not areligious, according to OP's definition.

OP's definition is objectively incorrect.

Agnostics believe the existence of God is unknowable, so have not ruled it out, and areligious just means not influenced by a formal, practicing religion. Neither would assert that God does not exist; on OP's list of words, only atheists assert that.

I believe in natural beauty, rhythms of life, the sense of souls of our loved ones who have since passed, and serendipity. None of those things happen without a God, or more superior energy, than is borne on Earth. That said, despite my DH (and kids! There’s a benefit to having a religious community when you’re young, within reason). being full-fledged Catholic, I’ll never join a formal religion.

Sounds like you'd like to believe, because everyone else does. But it just doesn't come naturally to you.

By the way, all the things you mention happen without a god.

DP: How? As the agnostics say, that is unknowable. Try your argument out.

When the most brilliant minds for and against argue the existence of God down to the final point they have words to articulate (leaving out the trappings of individual religious practices; we are talking pure epistemology and ontology), they come to a position where both acknowledge they can know no further and offer no 'proof ' or argument one way or the other. That that point, they diverge into belief or disbelief or accepted uncertainty. Neither would say the existence or non existence is absolutely certain and knowable to humans, though believe and disbelief can feel strong enough that it seems like certainty; rather they put forth their best argument for their belief -- and, importantly, they keep studying, thinking, searching, and reading others' positions. Interestingly, recent surveys of those engaged in this debate academically suggest that 70% end up tilted in favor of theism while fewer than 20% lean toward atheism. Could be a self-selection issue, but we are talking about people looking for the best academic argument for and against.

There is room enough for many minds and the discussion and exploration is a worthy pursuit. Debating and discussing, studying and researching: good. Fighting and denigrating: bad and unworthy of us. Ultimately, we should all be looking for guidance to live our lives in a manner that is ultimately "good," and each will find their own bumpy and imperfect path to that goal, relying on the grace of others to help and guide them.

The Christian god had a son, but not all religious god believing people are Christian.

The majority are Christian. Besides, Christians wield the most influence in the world today.
The super majority of people in the world are not Christian. You can say a plurality of the world is Christian as it is the largest minority with about 25-30%. Whether or not Christian’s wield the most influence in the world is certainly debatable but not a given.

The majority in the US are Christian.
I was unaware that this thread was only about people who live in the US.

Now you are aware.

I'm guessing our resident Bible thumper's mind was blown to learn that his God is nonbinary
