My employee refuses to have her camera on. Very introverted and self conscious. Luckily she's a high performer and we're a small company which tolerates this and other idiosyncrasies more than a Fortune 50 would, but yes, it's awkward and unprofessional.

It's super disrespectful to the presenters to keep your camera off. Have you never given a presentation, or delivered info in a video meeting? It's like talking to a blank wall. If you don't respect your colleagues even that much, please leave.

If I were your boss, this would appear in your performance review in terms of disrespect, not a team player, failure to adhere to norms, and ignoring direct instructions.

I can’t stand to see myself on camera. I’m very self-conscious and hate my appearance. Yet, it would never occur to me to have my camera off unless it was a very large meeting or training where most of the people are passively listening vs participating.
