I would have given the neighbors more time to show up. How hard would it have been to take care of a puppy for a few hours?

Such an overreaction to turn the puppy into a shelter after a few knocks on the neighbors door.

The end result of your actions is annoying to the neighbor.

But the dog was found, is safe, and is fine. Don’t overthink it. It’s not like you dumped the dog in an alley or acted lazy out of negligence.

It’s possible the owner will be annoyed, or themselves be hysterical or annoying. Don’t take it personally. I, myself, would be terrified if my dog had disappeared and there’s a high possibility I’d go a bit delulu. Either way, your actions were well and thoroughly considered. Move on.

If this happened to me, I likely would have found some way to house this dog in my home.
Perhaps keep it in a bathroom/spare room/etc. until the owners returned home.
Then if they didn’t return by nightfall (highly unlikely) I would then have gone to the Humane Society.

I live in SoCal though and our Humane Society will take the animal, I know cats…..they clip their ear then re-release them out on the street again.
Am not sure what they do w/dogs.

You did great! I have cats too and probably would have shut the cats or pup in another room for a bit.

The puppy never should have been left outdoors alone when the people went out! WTH were they thinking? Hopefully they never do that again!
