I have no issue with cancelling benefits for illegal aliens. Do you?
The grownups here are referring to immigrants. They are US Citizens. You know, like your grandparents or great grandparents were?
Not sure how you turned "immigrant" into "illegals," except that you've taken too many MAGA pills.
Right now we have a he said / she said situation. Each case needs to be adjudicated. No one here can say whether these 6k, a few of the, or most of them are here legally.
I do wonder if these folks are people who sought asylum. Didn’t the GOP claim agencies were broadening the definition inappropriately during the last administration?

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday signed a memorandum aimed at stopping undocumented immigrants and other ineligible people from obtaining Social Security Act benefits, the White House said.
Some undocumented workers obtain jobs by using fake or borrowed Social Security numbers and pay into Social Security, but are not eligible to receive social security benefits under current law.

We helped out a guy from Medellin Colombia through the process.
Unlike common perception it was not easy for him to get cash under the table jobs. He probably applied at 30 places before he got a job. All the business told my sister they could not hire him until he had the ITINnumber as the penalties are very large to businesses not paying legal.
He worked the cash job until his ITIN number came in upon which he was put on the legal payroll.

No.
You cannot obtain a US-issued SSN if you are NOT a legal citizen. These people are probably green card holders, naturalized citizens, here working on a visa/studying on a visa (H1Bs, F-1s, etc.), all of which are LEGAL immigrants. LEGAL. Keyword. They immigrated the correct way through the correct channels and were issued SSNs so that they can pay taxes and get services.
Just to clarify: a green card holder can have a SSN. When you are naturalized, you are no longer an immigrant.
The legal immigrants they are talking about here are probably asylum seekers whose status was recently revoked.
Cite for this? You don’t have one, because you have zero idea how these people were chosen. We do know that Trump has said the purpose is to make people self deport. Which means it’s highly likely you are wrong. If these people no longer had legal status, there would be no reason to jump through hoops and illegally alter government records to try to force self deportation. ICE could just pick them up and put them on a plane. The only reason to go through all this trouble is if they are here legally and are not eligible for normal deportation proceedings.

The word “immigrant” as used by OP, is completely MEANINGLESS.
Did you mean “illegal immigrants” OP? Maybe “aliens unlawfully present in the United States” perhaps?
If an alien is not here lawfully, why should they be receiving benefits, or expect to receive future benefits, reserved for U.S. citizens?
Aliens unlawfully in the USA are free to return to their home countries, where they can begin to pay into their own countries’ social security system.

"The Trump administration has moved to classify more than 6,000 living immigrants as dead, canceling their Social Security numbers and effectively wiping out their ability to work or receive benefits in an effort to get them to leave the country, according to two people familiar with the situation.
The move will make it much harder for those affected to use banks or other basic services where Social Security numbers are required..."

Yes. As has been said about 20 times on this thread. You can’t get an SSN unless you can her legally.
Wake up. Millions of illegals have SSN and driver's licenses thanks to open border politicians only looking for hispanic votes whether they are illegal immigrants or not.

Drivers licenses are issued at the state level so that is irrelevant to this conversation.
Nope. Illegal immigrants do not get SSNs. They get ITINs instead. How do know? Because SSA says so. Quit lying. Or listening to your lying orange God.
