Has anyone got any updates on IOWA scores yet . I know it's not going to be helpful . DD is really curious to know the scores , wanted to know her performance . Even I'm just curious to know . I checked with the teacher and she mentioned they are going to release it soon but not given any ETA on it . Usually they release any such info just before the spring break so just thought of checking .

Winner winner chicken dinner.

What is E3? Level 3?

It was a pilot for 2 years at first 10 and then 20 schools where all kids were given extensions to math whether they were in advanced math or not. I can't remember if advanced math kids were given even more extensions, but it was typically schools that were new to local level IV and doing the cluster model for it.

This year with the change in math standards at the state level (something that happens every 7 years for every subject) they rolled out E3 to every school quietly and changed the advanced math standards substantially. They are significantly less accelerated - as one can see by comparing prior years to this year - than they were last year in at least 3rd grade.

Some people are theorizing that those students at the 10 pilot schools actually didn't do well on the IAAT. This would be interesting because someone claiming to be an E3 pilot teacher on here has repeatedly stated her E3 kids did better on the 5th grade SOL than students before E3.

Before someone comes on here spreading this debunked false rumor, E3 is NOT the E3 network. It stands for something like enriching, extending, and another e and then math.

It's not like they're letting in other 6th graders from general education, right? It's still the same small group of kids who are eligible.

My middle school is no longer offering math 7 starting next year. Incoming students are being told it is open enrollment to algebra 1 if they’ve taken math 7, regardless of scores or success or recommendations. Math is now like every other subject: parents can put their child where they want them.

YMMV. Principals have always had a lot of discretion in how they apply the rules.

Yeah I’m not buying this. What school? What do kids who only took regular grade 6 math take in 7th?

Key

They will be in math 7 honors. Contact the school and verify if you don’t believe it. Pretty sure they aren’t the only school going this route.

Advanced Math is not determined byt he committee, it is determined by the school. Most schools places kids with high, 95th percentile or higher, iReady scores and a pass advanced ont he grade level SOL in Advanced Math.

The 6th grade SOL is not enough for Algebra 1 H. Sixth grade math is not pre-algebra, which is essentially what Math 7H is. The kids in Advanced Math/AAP are taking Math 7H and take the 7th grade SOL. Passing Advanced on that is a signal that the student is prepared for Algebra 1.

The bolded is absolutely not true.

We were told at our school (which is both base and center) that they were pushing schools to put more kids in advanced math. Our school absolutely added more kids into that program starting 2 (?) years ago.

Get ready to go the opposite direction. The push is moving toward “everyone gets more rigor!” with Gen Ed teachers encouraged to incorporate extended standards for all students. Therefore there’s no “need” for kids to walk to advanced math. Because they’re all going to be advanced. Or something.

Isn't that just the rollout of E3? That was absolutely the idea behind E3 when I talked to the person who was masterminding it about 3 years ago.

Doubt it. This just has to do with Reid's push to get more kids taking Algebra 1 earlier.

If it really does dumb things down - which remains to be seen - it will make it easier for kids to take Algebra 1 in 8th or earlier in general.

It has nothing to do with Algebra 1 in 8th grade. The change affects rising 7th graders. It’s about taking Algebra 1 in 7th.

She didn’t really want to take algebra in 7th anyway, for various reasons, but the stupid iaat meant she didn’t really have a choice (I wasn’t going to push the school without good reason).

My next kid prepped some and got a very high score on iaat (and usually aces the sol) but actually struggles more in math on a day to day basis than my oldest.

I think getting rid of the Iowa is great, because it was unnecessary and did actually prevent some kids who were ready from taking algebra in 7th

+1 I agree. My son scored 79 on IAAT due to the timing aspect (he didn’t finish) but scored pass advanced on his 7th grade math SOL. We put him in math 7H - he had 100s all year. It was almost too easy for him.

Teacher here. We look at IReady data and SOL data. We try to add more kids each year with strong scores.
