If you consume protein and veggies in reasonable portions, and no snacking between meals, your insulin levels won’t be constantly spiked, and you’ll lose the weight.
I followed my menopause doctor’s advice and it worked. After 3 months, I weigh what I did in my 20s and I have 2-3 cheat days a week where I eat what I want and have wine etc. It’s like magic but my dr assures me it’s basic biology.
Hmm, deprive myself and constantly feel miserable, or gain a few lbs and feel miserable. The choices SUCK, but I choose fat and happy, because I am going to enjoy life, and that includes food. And 10-15 pounds does not really make anyone "fat"
It is wild to me that concentrating on protein and veggies and not snacking seems "miserable." Maybe I am out of touch, but do most adults snack? Eating three meals a day with a focus on protein and veggies sounds fairly normal to me?
NP and +1
I’d rather eat a juicy medium-rare ribeye, perfectly grilled chicken thigh, or a crisp-skinned filet of salmon, than any type of cardboard-resembling “snack.” Bonus points for the fact that all of the above fills me up and doesn’t leave me wanting to snack an hour later.

I agree that being heavier is not a problem if you don’t mind it. For me, I wanted to get my weight down so I am happy with how I look in family photos, so my doctor sent me home with recommended reading and a plan.
The gist is to up your protein so you don’t get hungry between meals. I’m veggie so i do that with lentils, beans, tofu, cheese. At least 6 oz. Add same amount of veggies. Eat it all. Then stop grazing between meals. Like in France, no snacking. Calling it intermittent fasting makes it sound like it’s extreme, but it’s just eating when it’s mealtime.
It was immediate for me. I was the queen of grazing all day. Then within 2 days of stopping the grazing, my sugar cravings stopped. Within a week, I had dropped a few pounds. Within 3 months, I had dropped 18 pounds. I now add 2-3 cheat days a week so I don’t feel deprived and can have fun at restaurants. I don’t graze anymore. That time allows your insulin (fat storing hormone) to fall in between meals so you’re not constantly searching for the next sugar hit so you can store it as fat. Let your body relax from that constant insulin high.
After those first 2 days, I have never been hungry. And I learned that those first two days weren’t really hunger. Just sugar cravings. I see that now.
It may not work for everyone of course. But my dr (a menopause dr) said it works for nearly all her patients.
PP, I usually eat a later breakfast around 11 but will drink 2 cups of coffee with half and half in the morning. Does this mess up the no snacking rule? Should I have coffee with breakfast? Along those lines, if I’m used to snacking on fruit, yogurt, etc., should I start having those with my meals instead of between meals?
Yep! Caffeine causes a rise in insulin. Just water between meals. No food, coffee, juice. Just water.
Once I stopped grazing between meals, I realized that I had been eating and drinking all day. I love the freedom now— I eat only when it’s mealtime. And I love my new energy levels and clothing size.
Thanks. I’m going to try this out, though not having snack breaks to look forward to is going to be hard!

This! I'm 49 and it starts really hitting me- the weight gain. Only a year ago, I was 115 lbs and could easily go to 110 lbs with some calorie restriction. Now, I'm 120 lbs at 5'4" and literally cannot lose weight. At 45, I was still skinny, like 108 lbs. The struggle is real ladies.
120 is still slim and v healthy for your height. 108 was likely underweight. I don’t know who these people are who think they’re going to stay their high school weight their whole lives.

Snacking is for toddlers. Older children and adults do not snack if they eat proper meals. And they won't get fat either. It's really that simple.

Are you this pp?
Sure if that’s what makes you happy!! Other people are happiest with different thing. I’m shallow and love fitting in size 6 clothes. I’m totally jazzed when I can throw on those size 6 cute cropped pants and a colorful top and head out for drinks with my friends feeling stylish.
It’s a matter of personal preference no?
Because I responded to this PP that I am size two and eat a ton and sugar too, my posts kept disappearing. Even though I only asked how tall pp is, as in you pp might be much taller than me, and hence slim for her height.
Somehow, posts keep being removed here, and none of the posts were toxic whatsoever.
I reported posts that insulted posters size. The posts I reported were indeed rude and toxic. Seeing as they were deleted, it’s likely Jeff agreed.
I did not post anything that insulted people's sizes. All I asked was if pp was tall; nothing was added at all. I am pp who posted that I am finding it insane at 54 how just looking at food makes me gain weight. I'm now a size 2, short, but over the last six months, I've gained 15 pounds at 54. People comment that I look great, but that is only bcs I had room to gain weight. I exercise daily, I eat healthily, but I even posted that, all of a sudden, my appetite is insane and I can go hungry for days and lose a bit, but as soon as I eat normal portions, I am gaining weight.

The frustrating thing is that heavier people (generally) burn more calories at rest. So all things being equal, if you have a 140lb and 150lb person, the heavier person will be burning a few more calories just by virtue of having a bigger body.
But now in the throngs of perimenopause, and being 10lbs more, I definitely do not burn more. It feels so frustrating to be so active and eat pretty clean but still put on some lbs.
I feel like it came on all of the sudden - the past 6 months or so.
