Just saw this Strategist post where they try on all the jeans at Madewell and thought of this post because the last pair is the barrel-leg jeans people have been mentioning and it's also the pair the author liked the most. And here's how the author looks in them. As mentioned upthread, these really do not have an exaggerated shape (not clown pants). I think the shape essentially allows you to wear a more relaxed pair of jeans without extra fabric around the waist or ankle. I love the look of them:

Yes. This cut works best in a drapey fabric. The stiffer denim does indeed look like clown pants. But in a soft, drapey denim or linen, they can look relaxed and attractive.

It's not overtly sexy. That's okay. Your clothes don't all have to be sexy and form fitting.

I know they don't flatter the same way a pair of slimmer cut jeans do. If I'm just trying to look as good as possible, I look best in a pair of high rise, dark denim jeans in a straight or boot cut, with heels. Those are the jeans that are going to make my butt look best, and make me look slim and shapely and tall.

But I don't want to wear those. I want something comfortable that still looks fashionable and cute. The barrel leg jeans fit the bill.

Did anyone see Rashida Jones in the show Sunny? The barrel leg jeans remind me of the clothes she wears in that show. It takes place in Japan and she dresses very fashionably in it, but very covered up and her clothes are loose and baggy. It's not about looking sexy or shapely.


+1 are you dressing for the male gaze or the female gaze (or no gaze)? if the first - you're probably not wearing those jeans. otherwise, you might be. i was just out on a walk and saw someone wearing a pair with a pair of vejas, and i thought how she might well be a dcum person. (except i'm not in dc.)

Exactly. Why would someone deliberately want to look bowlegged? There are comfortable, loose jeans out there that don’t make the wearer appear to have rickets.
