Well, a white fellow student once earnestly explained to me that the athletic clubs and bonding experiences were about having shared interests — while the “Black tables” in the dining halls were about self-segregation, and that somehow threatened him. He felt that I was wrong to see the white tables as “white tables” because these were simply white INDIVIDUALS who, having something in common, decided to sit together. Yes, folks, he was completely incapable of seeing me and other students of color as individuals— rather than as a learning opportunities for people like him.

And hence the reason these groups are helpful. When you live most experiences of your life as an "only," finding a group to share and connect with is a lifeline. Most minorities have to move through their life experiences as an only. I'm Black. I moved to a white town to go to college. The Black student union was a lifesaver. Think of not being able to find products that work for your hair. Being able to make contact with the few Black students on campus to share information was key. Feeling lonely and misunderstood is really hard when you're young and don't yet have the foundation to move through this world feeling alone. Taking this away is a setback.

Communities naturally form among people for many reasons. There is no minority-based organization that refuses membership to White people. Even HBCU's allow White students to enter - with scholarships. There were White people in our student union. This is nothing more than an attempt for a very small segment of our society to control the narrative. Minorities are used to it. They want to keep people from being able to meet amongst themselves so that they can't "conspire."

These are all cultural organizations. African Americans do have a long standing culture that is somewhat separate from White American culture. Anybody can join these organizations, it’s not closed to other races. If you want a white organization go for it, you just can’t block anyone else for joining.
