It has 4 runways, including 3 parallel long N/S runways which have good lateral spacing between them and a 4th (mostly E/W) shorter runway. It has lots of spare landing/takeoff slots for additional flights, rather than having every single slot allocated to some flight (as DCA does).
All of these factors make Dulles one of the easiest and lowest risk airports to land at or takeoff from.
That said, people are correct that one is much more likely to die in a car accident than in an aircraft accident, at least within the USA. (Nepal or Bhutan might be different, not sure.)

Not sure this will be true anymore under this administration. I have several trips coming up and decided to drive whenever feasible. I’m sure I’m not the only one thinking that. Plane crashes are extremely tragic but typically seem like a rare anomaly. This one doesn’t feel that way.
The aviation industry is about to lose a lot of money due to this administration.
And Musk is encouraging air traffic controllers to quit, just like other Federal employees. Even though we have a life threatening shortage of air traffic controllers in this country.
There should be a way to have a recall vote.
Some if those who were asleep are waking up. But look at what you have wrought.

Me too. I usually fly out or Dulles because we mostly fly internationally but my teen is going away for a weekend nationally in a week (first trip alone!), flying back at 9pm and we chose National over BWI (we live in CCDC) for convenience. Now i am livid, hopefully it is going to be safer for a few weeks at least. My sister is coming from overseas in three weeks and i recommended a flight with connection landing at National instead of Dulles. She called me the day adter the accident to “thank” me for recommending such a safe airport.
Aside from this accident (still mindblogging that military helicopters are apparently allowed to fly on the landing path of airplanes ) it really seems the airport is too crowded and tried to object to new flights being added but was overruled.
It will be Dulles from us from now on and i cant wait for my kid and my sister to land safely

Baltimore County police have been hobbled with a “no chase” policy, even for violent carjackings.
Plus they now have so many other restrictions, they won’t help you and they don’t discourage crime anymore. Baltimore is dangerous gang territory.
Dulles is definitely the much safer option.
Have you actually been to Baltimore County? Much of it is pretty posh and very rural. I know anything with “Baltimore” in the title incites fear and hysteria, but really? Also, BWI is in Anne Arundel County.
I live equal distance from BWI and Dulles. Usually choose which one has the best time, route and fare. Surprisingly, United and IAD usually wins over BWI and Southwest, who loves to tout their “low fares,” but are often more expensive.
I grew up in Baltimore and I hate going to BWI but it’s not out of fear of crime. It’s nowhere near Baltimore City. It’s a $hit show to park there. Give me DCA any day. Or night.

You can go by metro.
Planes are a lot safer than metro.
