Harvard REA decision is before Chicago ED2 application deadline.

ED2 is just RD + commitment to show serious love.

Your kid does not seriously love Chiacago, if it's a solid 4th best. Chicago doesn't want to be the fallback plan for students who prefer "HYP". Preferring "HYP" is an obvious, on obviously signal that you aren't serious considering school fit. Those are very different schools.

DC got constant mailings from them but if he applied would be TO and likely rejected. It’s like the only thing they knew about him was his test score and they wanted him to apply so they could reject him and get their numbers up. Kinda sick if you think about it but not the only school that lures kids into the reject pile.

We had an exceptional tour at UofC, kid loved it, but was only interested in regular decision so figured no point and didn’t apply. I wonder how effective the marketing is, I guess it gets a wider range but also a turn-off to me. Most be a net positive if they continue.

People regularly complain that UChicago spams their inboxes and sends enough postcards to wallpaper a room. Apparently no other school spends as much money or castes as wide a net as UChicago? So when Dean Nondorf announces that the school receives roughly 20k applications for ED / EA how can anyone be this incredulous?

The Dean of Admissions said that there were 1000 accepted students. Not sure where you are getting the 1500 number. (Unless you really don’t understand what yield means).

I was on the Chicago accepted students admission zoom last week. Dean Nondorf said "we received about 20,000 applications for the early round, and accepted about 1,000." He did NOT say that there were 20k early DECISION applications. I was listening carefully.

It's entirely possible that 18k of those 20k applications were EA, and they accepted half of the ED applicants.

No sour grapes here - my kid liked the school, he's going and I guess they have to do what they need to do to get out of their financial hole, but I don't love the shady admissions practices.


Makes no sense that the majority of the 20k applications would be EA. At least at DC’s school, most kids apply to UChicago ED1. The close-to-zero EA acceptances rate is well known. This year, out of about 85 kids, 4 kids applied ED1…2 got in and 2 were rejected.

Even if you assume that half of the 20k applications were ED1 and the other half EA and that the acceptance rate for EA was zero, the acceptance rate for ED1 would be around 10 percent.

Just to add that there were 2 acceptances this year too. Both kids in the top 10 percent of the class. Lower ranked kids (not top 10) were accepted to Dartmouth, Cornell, Columbia.


That just tells you that those 2 kids could have aimed higher. instead they settled for a school with a 40% ED accept rate.

Maybe, but let's be for real. No one choose Chicago over an Ivy. Which is why Chicago has to play all these crazy games with admissions. It really is to their detriment and they should stop ASAP. But it sounds like they are absolutely desperate for $$.
