I agree that it shouldn't be necessary to be draped in layers BUT 2 layers with at least one long-sleeved (like t-shirt + fleece), long pants, and socks/slippers should be a minimum before complaining about being cold. Also simply getting up and walking around and/or having a hot beverage can help.

It boggles my mind that people think nothing of turning up the heat rather than adding layers. How old are all of you? I was raised in the 70s, and I had it drummed into me that unnecessary energy use was a moral failing.

I think 69 is fine if you have a built in humidifier in your furnace. That has been a game changer in our house. We replaced furnace and HVAC last year and added humidifier and it makes 69 feel like 72. In previous years, I was always cold and turning up the heat.

We keep the house at 68 overnight - any warmer than that and I’d melt. Thermostat kicks down to 50 around 5am (which drops the house to about 64) - helps with waking up.

You’re not supposed to keep your temperature at 69°. It encourages sex.

That temperature would make me miserable. I can handle too hot, but too cold makes everything ache. This I why I don’t go to my in-laws home anymore.

As an aside, my in-laws live in a house my husband I own and we pay all the bills. At night, they turn the heat OFF (they live in PA). They have broken two pipes this way and when temps fall below 30, the pipes to the second bathroom and laundry room freeze such that the water stops flowing. On Christmas Day my MIL spent the entire visit complaining that the house we bought them is soooooo cold at night. We said nothing but “hmmm.” We’ve previously told her to keep the heat on 24/7, but don’t bother anymore. She deserves to be slapped.

We live in DC, my family is in Italy and my ILs in upper Midwest. Since my kids were little, they skiped/whatsapped with grandparents and saw my mom wearing T-shirts in the summer and big wool sweaters with a high neck in the winter. Midwestern grandma always wearing light shirts all year around. OP should tell her daughter that cranking up the heating in the winter and AC in the summer is really not Earth- friendly and not even healthy. You body adjust and in the winter it is much healthier to live in a cooler home wearing warm clothes.

Unless they are hairless, your cats have a fur coat. Our winter temp in 68 during the day, and 64 at night. Your cats are fine.

When my mom is visiting, we up the temp to 70. Otherwise, she is wearing a winter hat & gloves.

My in laws caught me turning it down so we all just pack shorts and t shirts for their house. Meanwhile they wear cardigans over long sleeves.
