I only know of one person who didn’t get in anywhere. They aimed way too high and even the private school guidance counselor gave them fair warning. They ended up in a gap year and reapplied. They ended up at a low tier NESCAC.

Sounds like my kid's experience. Ended up at Mason saying the same thing as your kid about how they should have blown off more of high school and had more fun. Graduated last year into a career that was as good or better than friends and former classmates who went to much more prestigious schools.

Once the sting wears off, bloom where you are planted.

OP asked about students who “didn’t get in anywhere” not students who didn’t get in to their first choice. Come on let’s not be ridiculous and pretend “wound up at Tufts” is on par with having to go to community college when all Ivies failed.


Exactly. OP's question wasn't "where did your uber high stat kid end up after not getting in to HYP or their other top choice"...if it had been, Tufts would make perfect sense. The question was about students who "didn't get in anywhere"...of course, on DCUM, "anywhere" likely means "top 10."

1560 uva in state. WL or rejected every other T25. Asian male. Loves uva!! 2023 was the hardest graduation year for our high school for anyone without hooks

I genuinely don’t get this. How is Northeastern rejecting kids with 1570 on the SATs? I know I’m old, but are there that many kids with scores like that out there?

In RD they prefer kids w lower stats who are more likely to attend. If your kid wants to go, better ED up and get out your checkbook!

Graduating in 3 years with 3 stem majors (!) in honors from a top 15 in his field (it was a safety) publishing research and applying to grad school - we will see how this round goes.

He had a great time at his safety fwiw - lots of friend and it was good experience but he should have gotten in to those other 13 schools. It was a crazy outcome - white males from DMV faced a lot of unfairness in that era.

Mine is applying to NEU regular admission but really, really likes the school. She's high stats, 35 ACT + good sports, jobs and ECs and she's not at all confident of admission. I know there's a lot of hate, but our experience has been it's a tough admit for strong applicants. Based upon local experience, she's more confident about BC and BU, which are down her list.

PP. My kid loved Boston. At the time, really bummed about NEU. Accepted by BU with a chunk of merit. Still would have been $60k+/yr. Decided on UMD (from NOVA) and loves it. Good luck!


We're in MA these days but I can't quite shake DC, which she recognizes and makes her curious. She loves Boston but UMD (Engineering) is on her list, too. I would be thrilled to see her there, among many spots - as long as she's happy and engaged. Interesting days ahead.

I know a 1580 who was rejected from a lesser school than Northeastern. Yield protection alone would probably be enough for the denial (assuming nothing else on the application was glaringly negative) but NEU is famous for ED gaming and gaming of all sorts. This is exactly the kind of thing I would expect from a school like that.
