You have a good partner, OP. It's unfair to constantly compare him to someone from your past, especially if you only remember the positive aspects of your dead ex. This can lead to dissatisfaction and unhappiness in your current relationship. Have you considered therapy?

Correct. Most of the good men married long ago and remain married. Whatever you thought of the dating pool in your 20s, it's much, much worse by the time you hit your 50s.
