Just good enough to beat the most awful candidate in American history is not good enough.

For the GOP it's much simpler. They went from a solid history of nominating decent and well qualified people 95% of the country could respect even if they disagreed with policy to nominating Trump for three consecutive elections. How do you go from Reagan, the Bushs, Dole, McCain, and Romney to three consecutive nominations of Trump? It's not the same party it used to be but it's still feasible for the sensible majority in the party to return back to party of Lincoln, Teddy R, Eisenhower, and Reagan after Trump is dead or incapacitated.

The congress was functioning fine until Newt started the process of total obstinance and government shutdowns rather than compromise.

Again, don't blame the democrats for this. The Dems have never supported government shutdowns.

Regardless of who wins the presidency in 2024, we’re not getting a “normal” Republican Party anytime soon. The GOP started courting evangelicals decades ago, but still continued a steady shift further to the right. They got rid of the Fairness Doctrine and built propaganda-friendly media. They devised long term schemes to shore up their political influence. They found innovative ways to suppress certain voters despite the Voting Rights Act. Gerrymandering got more extreme. More fringe elements were welcomed into their tent, like anti government militia types. They began aggressively court packing by blocking as many Democratic appointed nominees as possible, creating more openings for future Republican nominations. They capitulated to Tea Party types. They elevated Sarah Palin to prominence. The table was set for a candidate like Trump. White Christian Nationalists were given a home.

Trump didn’t come along and ruin the Republican Party. He is the Frankenstein they’ve been building. He is the inevitable progression of the path they’ve been on for years. The Party has abandoned all principles except for opposing the Democrats. The GOP can’t return to longtime political norms because they’ll lose their base. There aren’t enough conservative normies to get Republicans elected right now. Don’t make the mistake of thinking that their party was taken away from them; it was given away by party leaders.
